Political Science and Theory

There remains a strong divide in the study of politics between people who consider themselves political scientists and political theorists. When Mansbridge's book first came out, it was praised for demonstrating that one can do both. And the praise is deserved.
The book focusses on two communities. The first, a small town in the Northeast, exemplifies town hall democracy. The second, an organization committed to providing various kinds of community help, exemplifies early seventies' attempts to have completely egalitarian organizations.
Mansbridge mentions that she included both because she had intended to contrast an adversarial democracy (the town meeting) with a unitary democracy (the help line), but that her data complicated the neat dichotomy. Mansbridge observed each community trying to resolve a difficult conflict, and she interviewed various members.
The book is rich, and I have found it very useful for thinking about why Americans have so much trouble imagining that discursive conflict might be a good thing. Mansbridge has beautiful quotes from people describing their discomfort with argument, and I think she's right to draw some general conclusions from them.
Although I'm not a political theorist, I found the book intelligent and intelligible, and I highly recommend it to someone who is interested in conflict within organizations.

From the 1st 5 minutes of picking up this book the Presence of God fell. As I read about John Paul's experience in the throne room and embraced the principles he teaches I could feel the atmosphere of heaven increase. This is more than a book, it is an experience!

John Paul's account of the Throne Room of God is wonderfully described and will transform your fleshly ideas of God. The only reason I gave this four stars instead of five is because it leaves you wanting more in depth descriptions of his encounter.

Guided meditation contemplating the throne room, not a retelling of his visit.

I just read the book which I got here at Amazon. No where does he claim that he was 7 days in heaven. Instead, he states in the opening this book is based on a spiritual experience he had, and there are about 3 places where he tells something brief about his own visit to heaven. The 7 days in this book are not about his own visitation, but instead this book is fashioned as a guided meditation for the reader, where the reader reads one of the "days" one day at a time, and meditates on the thoughts presented just concerning a small aspect of the throne room.

This book is written as a guided meditation by the author on which he has the reader imagine and meditate on each section on the thoughts about being in the presence of God to give the reader a guided mental imagining on what it can feel like standing before God, but only a very small telling of it. The chapters are not his visitations factual telling, but instead food for thought to contemplate a particular aspect of what it would be like for the reader in the heavenly throne room theme he presents in that guided meditation.

I was disappointed it was not about his own experience. He did include a couple of woven in snippets, but I purchased the book hoping it was just about his experience that I had heard him allude to in a couple of interviews. I still am trying to find if he has actual written about that visitation in full. Haven't yet found it because that is what I want to read. If you know this is a guided meditation inspired by his own visitation, and you want to meditate about being in the throne room, what it may be like, from the personal sensations, and not a detailed description of an actual trip there, this is a nice little book, but it is made like a gift book, in that it is sparse in the chapters for meditation purposes and not a regular story.

I became interested in the importance of rest in creative lives began when I noticed a paradox: many of history's most accomplished thinkers, artists, writers, and composers organized their lives around their work, but not their days. His writing has appeared in Scientific American, the Atlantic Monthly, Slate, Wired, and American Scholar, and numerous scholarly journals. He lives in Menlo Park, California.

The Essentials of Physchology I and II were assigned to me by my AP Physchology teacher. I expected the book to be boring and long, but it was the exact opposite. It summarizes each key point, making it easy to understand and very straight foward. It is also great for carrying around with you because it doesn't take up much space cause of its slim-ness. Great guide for getting started in Physchology.

CLASSIC ACHEBE, DEEP CHARACTER WITH DOUBTS AND DILEMMAS

Achebe is a master in portraying Nigerian society in transition, amid corruption, violence and the excitement of development. In this novel, Achebe portrays a schoolteachers that is first welcomed into a politician's home, then gets angered by him when the politician "steals" his girlfriend. The novel unfolds as the schoolteacher (Odili) enters politics as a way to avenge his poor fate with his girlfriend.

As with any Achebe novel, we are introduced in a developing society, still in the excitement of self rule after the British, but struggling to get set on a path towards development. Achebe is very ironic at time, and I think this novel especially shows his wry sense of humor. For example, the Minister of Culture is a rather cultureless man, put in that position through connections and bribery.

Overall, I recommend this book if you enjoyed Achebe's previous work (Things Fall Apart and No Longer at Ease are my favorites). At only 150 pages, it is the shortest by him that I have read, which makes it even more worth it. Would not recommend as your first Achebe.

after reading this study I feel like I never actually read the real Christmas Story until ...

Margaret is perhaps the most broadly knowledgeable and broadly minded scholar I have read. She reminds me of the profound religious thought of Mircea Eliade, but with a focus on Christianity. Her worldview puts Christianity within the shadow of the temple, and broadens the reading the Gospels by demonstrating how they allude to temple theology, and the prophecies regarding the restoration of Abrahamic temple ordinances . She does this with this analysis of the Christmas Story, as well. In fact, after reading this book I feel like I never actually read the real Christmas Story before. God bless you Margaret you made my Christmas season a beautiful one.

Highly recommended for your Biblical or interfaith reading group.

If you like reading well-written and well-researched critical Biblical studies, this book is for you. CHRISTMAS, THE ORIGINAL STORY delves into the Christmas story not only with the well-known Biblical texts of Luke and Matthew, but also looks beyond them, to sources as diverse as the Qumran and Dead Sea Scrolls, the Apocryphia, texts from Old Church Slavonic used by the Eastern Orthodox Church, sources in ancient Greek manuscripts, and even the Christmas story as told in the Qur'an. I found it a much meatier read than I had expected, and really enjoyed it. I felt that I was being taken on an archaeological tour of the text by an expert guide, who knew all the deeper meanings of the text, and could explain them easily, with copious footnotes, so I could check the sources for myself, if I wanted to.
Recommended for anyone who is serious about biblical studies, this book is perfect for very bright teens on up to students of religious studies in university and in life. (Younger children would be baffled, I think, by the vocabulary and the references.) Highly recommended for your Biblical or interfaith reading group.
