The Fox, by D. H. Lawrence

The Fox is a novella by D. H. Lawrence which first appeared in The Dial in 1922. Set in Berkshire, England, during World War I, The Fox, like many of D. H. Lawrence’s other major works, deals with the psychological relationships of three protagonists in a triangle of love and hatred. Without the help of any male laborers, Nellie March and Jill Banford struggle to maintain a marginal livelihood at the Bailey Farm. A fox has raged through the poultry, and although the women—particularly the more masculine Nellie—have tried to shoot the intruder, he seems always to elude traps or gunshot (font: Wikipedia)

Review
The Fox is set during World War 1. Banford and March live on a farm together, because it does not look like they will marry. Although they are only in their late twenties, during this time to be single at that age is old, and also millions of men are dead due to the war. Banford is thin and frail, contrasting against her companion who is physically masculine, yet particular detail is paid to March's face that is feminine and expressive. The women are depicted as fearful of femininity and fertility, selling a heifer before it calves etc. The fox becomes a hindrance to Banford and March, but March finds she cannot hunt it, and rather, she becomes entranced by it. Shortly after this, Henry, a young man, comes to stay with the girls, and a link is established between the fox and Henry. This intruiging novella explores gender roles, sexuality and femininity. Underappreciated
By The Mandarin
D.H. Lawrence is well-known for his novels ("Lady Chatterly's Lover," "Women in Love," "Son and Lovers") but his shorter works are equally masterful. In this crisp novella, Lawrence beautifully paints a minimalistic tableaux of romance, magic, and high tension, around a mere three characters, on one farm. Anyone who ever groaned at the immense loquacity of "The Rainbow," might be surprised to discover that "The Fox" is by the same Lawrence.

I must add that Lawrence's philosophy on sexual relationships and love (as depicted in "The Fox" and other works) have been often been criticized as misogynistic. In a sense, these criticisms are valid, but they are also unfairly simplistic. Regardless, Lawrence is a fantastic writer, as "The Fox" amply demonstrates.

Bad formatting
By Kris
The story by Lawrence is fantastic. Unfortunately the formatting of the e-book is atrocious. Words frequently cut out at the end of the line creating a distracting reading experience. Also, Amazon really has to fix the reviews system. The second reviewer seems to be reviewing a soft cover version of the story, as opposed to critiquing this e-book Australian Gutenberg version. Each edition should get separate reviews. I hope they fix this soon, and separate reviews according to the right products. Otherwise this service is not very helpful.

Erotica requiring imagination.
By tony from Philly
I first read it in college over 50 years ago. The fact that Lawrence wrote it (and his other great novels) in an era of censorship and condemnation
caused him to force the reader to utilize imagination - a tact that modern writers need not master due to the ability to write so sexually explicitly that little imagination is required. Highly erotic as we discover the sexual confusion of Nellie. The movie from 1967 was able to take liberties due to the more relaxed censorship. If they ever make the movie again I'm sure it will result in a menage' which just might have pleased old D.H. anyway. Treat yourself to the type of erotica Lady Mary might have kept hidden under the covers at Downton Abbey.
