Stone Brewing Co. Brewmaster Mitch Steele has brewed at some of the largest and smallest breweries in the world since graduating from UC Davis with a fermentation science degree. Landing at Stone Brewing Co. in 2006, Steele has overseen the brewing and packaging operations as the brewery has grown from a 48,000-barrel operation to 148,000 barrels in 2011. Steele is a long-time IPA fan and an avid homebrewer.

Well written but average information

If you like beer history, you'll like this book. About half of it is history of the IPA from 1800 to present. The history is well written and extremely well researched. If you are the sort who reads the beer history blog Shut Up about Barclay Perkins, you will enjoy the book.

Unfortunately, I found the book lacking in real tips for brewing better (modern) IPAs. There is good recipe information for brewing historical IPAs circa 1800-1850 (including water chemistry), but none of the recipes are scaled for the standard 5 gallon homebrewer setup. I myself am looking forward to using the information to brew a heavily hopped Burton IPA in the near future. There are also excellent recipes for some of the best-known modern IPAs in the country. All in all, about 50 pages of recipes. These recipes are from the horse's mouth, so to speak, and should be much more accurate than anything you find on the internet.

There is some style discussion for double IPAs, black IPAs (or dark cascadians, whatever you want to call them), and Belgian IPAs, but it really doesn't amount to much and is more of a side note than a main focus.

There is good brewing information in the book, but if you have already read Palmer's How to Brew and Yeast by White and Zainesheff (both of which are excellent books all homebrewers should read), I don't think there will be anything new to you. In the end, it is a nice addition to the interested brewer, but definitely not a must-have. Cheers.

Excellent Book

Mitch Steele graduated from University of California Davis with a degree in fermentation science in 1984 and he spent a major chunk of his brewing career as a brewer with Anheuser Busch. For the past 8 he has been head brewer at the Stone Brewing Company, known for their assertive IPAs. Mitch has an incredible amount of experience making beer and he buttresses that experience with extensive research into IPAs. In this book he provides an excellent history of the development and growth of IPA from the early 1700s to the present craft beer revolution. He gives a good overview of the current IPA variations and presents some of the challenges of brewing each. Mitch follows this with a good section on IPA ingredients and finishes with 60 pages of recipes. The recipes do not give specific amounts. He gives targets, identifies the percentages you need to meet the targets and assumes that you will use the information in his ingredient chapter to scale the recipe up to your size of a system. If Mitch’s explanations are not clear enough (I thought they were), you can figure the specific amounts for your system using either Ray Daniels Designing Great Beers or John Palmer’s How to Brew. This book is published by Brewers Publications, a division of the Brewer’s Association, a craft brewer’s trade organization. The book is intended for both craft and home brewers but by shooting for both audiences, doesn’t always serve both well. On the whole, this is an excellent, well prepared book.

The first half of the book is a fascinating and indulgent historical journey through the history of IPA that lays to rest many of the 'alternative facts' that exist on the where, when and why IPA actually became IPA. I particularly enjoyed the second half where Mitch homes in on the actual business of brewing IPAs. He uses a systematic methodology of comparative analysis using old and new world examples to highlight how techniques and tastes have changed to support many varieties under the same name.
A great read.

Lots of room for improvement

Two specific things about this book keep me from rating it higher:

1- The book has a lot of errors. For instance, the polynomial equations for the stress concentration factors (K_I) in chapter 2 are labeled incorrectly. The diagrams for Center Cracked Tension and Double Edge Notched Tension are reversed. There are also other errors, but to list them all here would be pointless.

2- The problem set is close to worthless. Of the 600 page book, there are 18 pages of problems, or less than 100 total problems. The problems are not even that difficult. The "derivations" in the problem sets hardly require more than 2-3 lines of work, and very little deep thought. In other words, the problems are superficial.

Because of the lack of good problems and the errors (in fact, one of the problems seems to have an error in the difference between compliance and stiffness), I wouldn't feel comfortable using this book as a reference. No doubt, it does provide an excellent introduction or overview of fracture mechanics in general, but I would not feel comfortable with this book as my main source of information. There are also few examples with solutions to motivate learning. A good teacher is necessary to go beyond the basics of this text.

This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.

the one that tells you heavy rains must be enjoyed with chai and kanda bhaji

The book explores the true story and life of 3 immigrants who left home - India - to come to the land of opportunities and years later tried to figure out where home really is.
It is about that all too familiar voice in the head of almost every immigrant - the one that makes you nostalgic when you hear an old hindi tune, the one that reminds you every year how far away you are when Diwali comes along, the one that tells you heavy rains must be enjoyed with chai and kanda bhaji, the one that keeps you awake at night thinking about family, the one that keeps asking is there is a way that leads you back to where you came from?
If that tiny little voice does exist somewhere inside of you this book is going to be a wonderful, poignant read for you. The authors have done a great job penning down the thoughts and emotional conflicts of an entire generation of immigrants. Definitely worth a read.

A very good read for anyone toying with the idea of r2i.....

I never thought I would leave India. But then I did and now I long to go back. But with time the confusions, questions have just exploded. This book puts everything I ever thought of in my mind into words. Couln't have done a better job of it myself.....Kudos to all three authors for putting this together.....

Must read for R2i wannabes (and others too)

R2i is a wonderful book that takes the reader through the journey of 3 US immigrants that came to the United States in search of opportunities, settled down, thrived and then began to question where home really is. I loved this book from the get go - mostly for 2 reasons:- the first being I could relate to the experiences of the authors right from the anxiety of applying to American Universities, waiting for acceptances, coming to the US all by yourself and experiencing the culture here. The challenges they face and how they are able to adapt to this new world and create a space for themselves. The second reason is the writing style of the authors. The three authors narrate their perspectives almost in a unique blog like format and although these perspectives differ, I found myself relating to something in each of them. I have been diligently following Parth Pandya’s blog and enthralled by his writing style. He does not fail to impress me in this book. All in all, I would highly recommend this book as a casual fun read!

David Friedman is a law professor and academic economist with a doctorate in physics and more than four decades of involvement in historical recreation. Magic, romance, conspiracy, intrigue,

I have read Friedman first fantasy novel, Harald from Baen Books. An epic fantasy but with little or no magic. So when he told me he had another story full of magic I was not sure how it would go. I was really surprise. For an expert on economics he writes a very good fantasy. His magic system is well thought out and explain. His characters are well rounded and grow through the story.

If you like magic and fantasy, with real story based on the same this book will pleased you.

I hope you buy it read it and praise it to the sky. If he makes money from this then he is more likely to write another.

Introducing this world through questions and answers in dialogues between Ellen the magical prodigy and her peers, Friedman constructs one of the most original and coherent systems of magic that I have ever read about. I'm impressed by the attention and thought he put into creating something that is like an alternate form of physics in a magical universe with different laws of nature.

The characters are enjoyable and I wanted to know what would happen next, but I'd guess at least 50% of this book is dialogue. Friedman likes to describe characters reasoning out actions- everyone has a tendency to state their well-considered, logical thoughts and then await their opponent's perfectly logical responses. The lack of emotional, rash words or actions is unreal, but I still found the arguments amusing and sharp.

The book starts off strong. Ellen's responses to various threats are well calculated and I was excited to see what would happen next. The 2nd half of the book seemed off balance in terms of the action- quite a lot happens in terms of large groups of people maneuvering and plotting but is not described in detail. I get the feeling that as a fantasy writer Friedman is more about ideas than about the craft.

Although the book could have been better executed, the ideas are creative, original, and entertaining. I think the book positions itself well as the first among many others in a series.

Strange and wondrous

Some novels, even good novels, can be read with your mind coasting in neutral. This is not one of them. But the reader who puts in some effort will find rich rewards here: magic, romance, intrigue, murderous politics, ...

One of the marks of really good fantasy is that the magic makes some sort of sense. (All too often magic is just used as a plot device, the way many Star Trek episodes used technobabble.) In this book, the magic system is so good that Friedman can depict people doing research into magic, at some length, and make it entertaining! Very, very few fantasy writers ever manage that.

Be warned: Freidman adheres strongly to the old writer's maxim to "show, not tell", with the result that readers need to pay attention to understand what is happening. There is a scene where one character "stop[s] breathing" briefly because of a single word. Only when you think about how each character present would have thought do you realize what a great scene it is. Also, you need to keep track of which quotes continue across paragraph boundaries.

This book will take more effort to read than most books, but it will be worth it. Strongly recommended.
