Defined by ASPET as the study of the effects of chemical agents of therapeutic value or with the potential toxicity on biological systems, pharmacology is critical to understanding how drugs can correct the biochemical abnormalities responsible for human illness. It is one of the core disciplines students need to master in order to develop effective drugs and therapeutics.
This book, the updated and enhanced English translation of a successful and multi-edition Italian text, covers basic and general pharmacology, from a cellular and molecular perspective, with particular attention mechanisms of drug action – the fundamental basis for proper clinical use - without neglecting drug interactions, general physiological functions, and the toxicological effects of chemical compounds . As opposed to classical pharmacology textbooks, which spend more time detailing medical and therapeutic effects, the authors offer thorough discussion of drug action mechanisms at cell and molecular level and the rules governing drug pharmacokinetics and development.
The target-oriented approach within the text changes the common perception of drugs as chemical entities affecting organisms and highlights the interdisciplinary and dynamic nature of pharmacological research. As such, the book introduces pharmacologists to a more integrated view of their discipline and fosters a holistic approach to the analysis and treatment of diseases – one in which drugs are regarded as critical tools to discover new cell functions, mechanisms, and therapies.
Complementary to the main text, the book has a companion website that builds on the content within the book itself by addressing more specific subjects and methodologies. The site is ideal for readers who have mastered the basic principles and are seeking more in-depth knowledge of detailed topics.
More than just a course text for pharmacology students, this book can also be a key reference and resource for researchers and professionals involved in any aspect of drug development

I have read this most interesting textbook on General and Molecular Pharmacology with a feeling of ’this should have indeed been done, what a timely production!’. The book was put together by Guido Fumagalli and Francesco Clementi, accompanied by a very impressive cohort of co-authors and was printed in late September 2015. It differs from other books in the field in that it covers both the historical origin and the future prospects of molecular pharmacology with its links to many other fields of research, including psychology (with the enlightening contributions of Giancarlo Pepeu), biochemistry and material science. The book is comprehensively built in a target-oriented approach that assists the readers in better understanding the cellular and molecular mechanism of action of the described drugs, which immediately sheds new light on their clinical applications. It further integrates a global view of molecular pharmacology, which enables fresh understanding of the research power of drugs, viewing them as tools for in-depth discovery of new cell functions, mechanisms and well-balanced therapies. By highlighting the interdisciplinary and dynamic nature of pharmacological research, this text book integrates the essential aspects of molecular pharmacology in a printed section and also presents the most recent research achievements on each subject as a long list of electronic supplements for those interested in a deeper approach, either for professional use or as study material. Both the book and the supplements should be of great value to students of pharmacology, biotechnology and biomedical studies in general.
Guido Fumagalli and Francesco Clementi are to be congratulated on taking on this immense mission!

I am impressed by this textbook in general pharmacology. Its style is consistent throughout. The presentation of basic molecular and pharmacological concepts is clear. I like its organization into a separate basic themes, each admirably brief but to the point and up to date as far as I can tell. It is easy to find ones way around the book. The implications of basic knowledge for therapeutic interventions are well laid out, both existing ones and others under development. Limitations of current therapies are emphasized, which should help in avoiding overmedication. I congratulate the authors for a textbook that should be very useful to researchers and practioners in medical and related fields.

The text is outstanding and the coverage complete.
By S.J. Enna
The text is outstanding and the coverage complete, with a very logical and scientific approach to the subject. The volume is comprehensive while at the same time focused on elements essential for understanding drug mechanisms and clinical uses. Besides being a useful guide for medical students, this book, either in its entirety or in part, is particularly appropriate for graduate courses in pharmacology and as a reference for those actively engaged in the field.
