Stunning
By Lori Haggett
If anyone were to try and describe this book as a bore, I couldn't conceive any reason why. This book held me completely spellbound. The book starts off with Joe experiencing these unusual chain of events on the one year anniversary of his wife and childrens plane crash. As the days progresses he comes into contact with families who had also lost their loved ones on this devestating flight, but as soon as he does come into contact with them, they begin to parish themselves due to unexplainable suicide and deaths. So what secrets does this "Sole Survivor" have? And will Joe feel these answers justify his loss? I know this book kept me captivated right down to the last page, and Joe's last decision.

Not TSA approved
By Amanda Richards
I recently picked up this book for four reasons:

1. It was on sale

2. I'd just finished reading "The Husband"

3. I needed light entertainment for a long flight

4. I was in a hurry and it was conveniently stacked near to the register

It was only during the boarding process that I glanced at the back cover, and discovered my faux pas, which did not escape the notice of a literate cabin attendant who gave me "the look".

Okay, maybe a novel about a plane crash is not ideal for a five hour flight, but I'm not superstitious that way (knock wood). Unfortunately, this is a typical Dean Koontz book - it starts off smoothly, gains momentum, takes off and gets moving at high speed, and just when you're enjoying the flight, it suddenly goes crazily off course, crashes and burns.

A crime reporter loses his wife and two daughters in a bizarre plane crash that kills everybody on board. A year later he's still in depression, but then he meets a woman who apparently survived the crash. He starts tracking her down, and relatives of the other victims suddenly start committing suicide under very strange circumstances. When he eventually finds her, things get even weirder, and we're back to secret labs, mad scientists and illegal experiments, mixed with cults, conspiracies and magic pictures.

Enjoy the ride while it lasts, but beware of the sudden stop.

Sensory chocolate...If I were blind, I'd want Koontz to be my eyes
By KMC
I relished this book the way one would relish a good chocolate bar...reading and letting it soak into my soul. This is one of the few books I've read that actually draws you into the scenery. You don't know if it's the reality of the characters or Koontz's talented, yet subtle description of places and situations. When he's sitting on the beach, you can feel almost hear the waves and smell the sea salt. When he's on the run from dangerous people, you almost feel like you're there in the passenger seat beside him.

I finished this book, put it down and just said, "Wow..."

Is there life after death? That's the question this book tackles...and while the journey to this answer is spell-binding, I think we, the readers, wanted more elaboration into this question. If only Koontz knew all the answers!

I'm surprised at the negative reviews, but I can see why some wouldn't like this. Unfortunately, many Koontz readers aren't true lovers of his literary genius. Koontz books are usually prominently displayed in the grocery store's best-seller section...a convenient buy for readers not looking for a read from someone with enormous talent, but rather something that will entertain with a good plot but no supporting filler or depth.

If you're not a serious reader, but a poolside one, this might not be the book for you. The glory of Koontz's writing is in the details and the ending isn't written for the poolside crowd that want to see the impossible happen. There's no swell of trumpets and bringing back of the dead. The ending is tremendously satisfying, but I wish it was elaborated on with as much detail as the rest of the story.

To really "get" Koontz's writing, you have to have an open mind and leave aside skeptical opinions, as much of what he writes seems to be horror, sci-fi, supernatural, or suspense. You have to fully allow yourself to leave your own world or you will never be able to enjoy the tale as presented.

Nobody can deny that Koontz is a spectacular writer. I haven't read every single one of Koontz's novels and I'm glad I haven't. I think it dims your appreciation for a good novel when you read it because you spend all your time comparing it to every other work ever written by Koontz. When it comes to a good author, this can be like comparing your own children. If you have never read Koontz, definitely buy this book. If you have, try to clear your mind of who the author is and "open your heart" to this wonderful story.

Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism, by George A. Akerlof, Robert J. Shiller

The global financial crisis has made it painfully clear that powerful psychological forces are imperiling the wealth of nations today. From blind faith in ever-rising housing prices to plummeting confidence in capital markets, "animal spirits" are driving financial events worldwide. In this book, acclaimed economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller challenge the economic wisdom that got us into this mess, and put forward a bold new vision that will transform economics and restore prosperity.

Akerlof and Shiller reassert the necessity of an active government role in economic policymaking by recovering the idea of animal spirits, a term John Maynard Keynes used to describe the gloom and despondence that led to the Great Depression and the changing psychology that accompanied recovery. Like Keynes, Akerlof and Shiller know that managing these animal spirits requires the steady hand of government--simply allowing markets to work won't do it. In rebuilding the case for a more robust, behaviorally informed Keynesianism, they detail the most pervasive effects of animal spirits in contemporary economic life--such as confidence, fear, bad faith, corruption, a concern for fairness, and the stories we tell ourselves about our economic fortunes--and show how Reaganomics, Thatcherism, and the rational expectations revolution failed to account for them.

Animal Spirits offers a road map for reversing the financial misfortunes besetting us today. Read it and learn how leaders can channel animal spirits--the powerful forces of human psychology that are afoot in the world economy today. In a new preface, they describe why our economic troubles may linger for some time--unless we are prepared to take further, decisive action.

"Akerlof and Shiller are the first to try to rework economic theory for our times. The effort itself makes their book a milestone."--Louis Uchitelle, New York Times Book Review

"There is barely a page of Animal Spirits without a fascinating fact or insight."--John Lanchester, New Yorker

"Akerlof and Shiller succeed, too, in demonstrating that conventional macroeconomic analyses often fail because they omit not just readily observable facts like unemployment and institutions such as credit markets but also harder-to-document behavioral patterns that fall within the authors' notion of 'animal spirits.' Confidence plainly matters, and so does the absence of it. When the public mood swings from exuberance to anxiety, or even fear, the effect on asset prices as well as on economic activity outside the financial sector can be large."--Benjamin M. Friedman, New York Review of Books

"Two of the most creative and respected economic thinkers currently at work, George Akerlof and Robert Shiller, . . . [have written] a fine book at exactly the right time."--Clive Crook, Financial Times

"A truly innovative and bold work. . . . At a time when plummeting confidence is dragging down the market and the economy, the authors' focus on the psychological aspect of economics is incredibly important."--Michael Mandel, BusinessWeek

"Animal Spirits [is] . . . the new must-read in Obamaworld."--Michael Grunwald, Time

"[Animal Spirits] really applies to all the big areas where we need change."--Peter Orszag, Obama budget director (quoted from Time magazine article)

"White House Budget Director Peter Orszag is a numbers guy, a propeller head as President Obama would say. But as David Von Drehle and I write in this week's print version of Time, Orszag has been spending his time recently reading not about spreadsheets, but about psychology. In particular, he has been reading a new book by the economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller called Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives The Economy, and Why It Matters For Global Capitalism. . . . We are, it turns out, slaves to the Animal Spirits. They have brought us to our knees. And now they are the only things that can save us."--Michael Scherer, Time.com's Swampland

"In their new book, two of the most creative and respected economic thinkers currently at work, George Akerlof and Robert Shiller, argue that the key is to recover Keynes's insight about 'animal spirits'--the attitudes and ideas that guide economic action. The orthodoxy needs to be rebuilt, and bringing these psychological factors into the core of economics is the way to do it. . . . The connections between their thinking on the limits to conventional economics and the issues thrown up by the breakdown are plain, even if they were unable to make every link explicit. Even more than Akerlof and Shiller could have hoped, therefore, it is a fine book at exactly the right time. . . . Animal Spirits carries its ambition lightly--but is ambitious nonetheless. Economists will see it as a kind of manifesto."--Clive Crook, Financial Times

"An influential Democrat who was also one of the world's top-ten, highest-paid hedge fund managers last year thinks he knows which book is at the top of the White House reading list this spring: Animal Spirits, the powerful new blast of behavioural economics from Nobel prize-winner George Akerlof and Yale economist Robert Shiller."--Financial Times

"Akerlof and Shiller remind us that emotional and intangible factors--such as confidence in institutions, illusions about the nature of money or a sense of being treated unfairly--can affect how people make decisions about borrowing, spending, saving and investing. Animal Spirits is an affectionate tribute to the man [John Maynard Keynes] whose ideas, unfashionable for the past 30 years, have resurged."--Nature

"Animal Spirits is a welcome addition to our Hannitized national economic debate, in which anyone who advocates government spending risks being labeled a socialist. . . . Animal Spirits is most compelling when the authors summon all the key behavioral patterns to explain vast, complex phenomena such as the Great Depression. . . . Animal Spirits . . . [is] aimed squarely at the general reader, and rightly so: Macroeconomics is now everybody's business--the banks are playing with our money."--Andrew Rosenblum, New York Observer

"[A] lively new financial crisis book."--James Pressley, Bloomberg News

"The two superstars have produced a truly innovative and bold work that attempts to show how psychological factors explain the origins of the current mess and offer clues for possible solutions. At a time when plummeting confidence is dragging down the market and the economy, the authors' focus on the psychological aspect of economics is incredibly important."--Michael Mandel, BusinessWeek

"What Sigmund Freud did for the study of the mind, George Akerlof and Robert Shiller are doing for economics. Freud, healer or fake--take your pick--built a career and a field of medicine on the idea that people are driven by irrational forces. Akerlof, professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley and winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in economics, and Shiller, the Yale economist who is the eminence grise of the housing meltdown, argue that massive government market intervention programs are the only way to turn fear into enthusiasm for spending and investing--the 'animal spirits' that are an essential part of recovery. . . . Akerlof and Shiller pick up on the idea of the emotional impetus to investment. With elegant reasoning and lovely prose, they demonstrate that we'll all be wallowing in misery unless governments around world, especially the in the G7 nations, help to return markets to optimism. . . . Animal Spirits is a fine discussion of the last few decades of development of economic theory, especially monetary economics."--Andrew Allentuck, The Globe & Mail

"[T]his book is rather more than the usual lament about the failings of economics. Its authors are two of the discipline's leading lights. . . . Most of the time, the unrealistic assumption of rationality serves economists fairly well. They should, however, be more prepared to depart from it, especially in times like these--even if that makes behaviour more difficult to describe in elegant equations. Messrs Akerlof and Shiller have therefore done their profession a service."--The Economist

"With Animal Spirits we hone in on how incentives and narratives can be created to channel the human psychological factor into collectively healthy directions, and how to be aware of the fictions we tell ourselves about how we wish the world and greed and financial security worked. [Animal Spirits] sheds light on complex issues and leaves readers with a better grasp of undercurrents and--most importantly--a rediscovered belief in principles of common sense and caution."--Daily Kos

"The new book from George Akerlof and Robert Shiller, Animal Spirits, has been getting a lot of press of late, and quite rightly: it's really good. It's not only very readable; it also offers a compelling vision of a very different type of macroeconomics--one where behavioral considerations are front and center, rather than simply providing what Clive Crook calls 'ad hoc modifications' to the standard, ridiculously oversimplified and unrealistic, model. . . . [I]f you read only one book on this subject, make it Animal Spirits."--Felix Salmon, Portfolio.com

"As George Akerlof and Robert Shiller show in a new book Animal Spirits, this is no freak storm. It may mark the long-awaited encounter between psychology and economics. . . . Akerlof and Shiller's book is probably the first macroeconomic exploration of the subject that is accessible to those interested in the subject but who don't have the academic training to understand the detailed argument."--Mint

"My book of the week is an easy one this time around: it's Animal Spirits, by Robert Shiller and George Akerlof. . . . Admittedly, I'm biased as a fan of both Shiller's and Akerlof's. Believe me, however, when I say the blessedly brief Animal Spirits is a thoughtful and well-written look at how economics discarded psychology and lost its way on the trip from Adam Smith, through Keynesianism, to laissez-faire. The book puts the current crisis in a useful economic context, with consistent and practical selections from behavioral finance illuminating everything along the way. . . . Highly recommended."--Paul Kedrosky, SeekingAlpha

"Another contribution to the human-nature-ensures-economics-is-irrational school of thought. But, unlike many of the rants against people trying to make an honest profit, this is a measured examination of how the present crisis is explained in economic terms. And so it should be. George Akerlof is a Nobel prizewinner, Robert Shiller teaches at Yale and is the author of Irrational Exuberance, which should give you an idea of this one's approach. This fascinating work uses economics to explain real-life issues, such as real estate price cycles, to key policy problems, such as the relationship between inflation and employment."--Stephen Matchett, The Australian

"George Akerlof and Rober Shiller's Animal Spirits is a plea to start believing our lying eyes rather than the model. Rather than try to explain away the apparent irrationality in human behaviour, Akerlof and Shiller say we need to try to understand it and shape policies that take it into account. . . . The core message of Animal Spirits is that we should stop trying to cage the spirits and instead admit their central importance. Specifically, this means that world governments will need to intervene forcefully in the current economic crisis with both fiscal stimulus and direct measures to stimulate lending--to restore some of the confidence that the crash has sapped."--Matthew Yglesias, The National

"In saluting Keynes' quip, Akerlof and Shiller argue that much of the story is in the unreliability and incompleteness of supposedly rational behavior--the micro-foundation of the free-market model. They contend that modern economics, even self-described Keynesian economics, has given short shrift to this core behavioral insight. . . . Their best chapter is on the limited capacity of central banks to prevent or cure calamities."--Robert Kuttner, The American Prospect

"Akerlof and Shiller take psychological research seriously, and it's refreshing to see that they're not trying to reinvent the wheel. . . . The book is an interesting read and would probably be very useful for an undergrad class that needs an introduction to behavioral economics. A & S do a nice job of moving between the theoretical and the practical, the empirical and the implied. The writing is accessible and the topic is more than relevant to our current economic situation."--Orgtheory.net

"Animal Spirits is succinct, clear and lively."--Brad Willis, Edmonton Journal

"In an intriguing new book, Animal Spirits, US economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller argue that psychology plays a far bigger role in determining economic outcomes than economists realize--and that, broadly speaking, people get what they expect. If we think good times are ahead, we act confidently in a way that creates them. And if we expect a downturn ahead, we act defensively and unwittingly ensure that's what we get."--Tim Colebatch, The Age

"The authors are right in pointing out the inadequacy of conventional economics in understanding, not to say addressing, today's economic woes, because they fail to take into account these animal spirits."--Wan Lixin, Shanghai Daily

"[Animal Spirits] is a short, thoughtful and sometimes simplistic book that calls for a different vision of economics. . . . Animal Spirits may well be a GPS system for a changing economic future."--Gene Rebeck, Delta Sky

"Animal Spirits presents a rigorous case for the importance of 'confidence multipliers' and 'stories' in explaining recent market behaviour and of 'fairness' and 'money illusion' in preventing wages from falling in recessions to the market-clearing rate. Written in an accessible style, the book provides a very useful practical primer for policy-makers, practitioners and academics on many aspects of the current crisis. The authors also make a compelling theoretical case for macroeconomists taking more account of the role of non-economic motives and irrational responses."--Richard Bronk, The Business Economist

"[T]he authors do a superb job of conveying the importance of bevaioural economics to a non-specialist audience. They increase our understanding of recent economic events and they show that animal spirits affect how governments should manage the economy."--Natalie Gold, Times Higher Education

"Animal Spirits offers a road map for reversing the financial misfortunes besetting us today. Read it and learn how leaders can channel animal spirits--the powerful forces of human psychology that are afoot in the world economy today."--Money Science

"[T]his very book seems to be one of the 'must-reads' in the Obama administration."--Andreas Ernst, JASSS

"Ideologists are likely to dismiss this volume. However, for other readers--whether their perspectives are quantitative or qualitative--Animal Spirits may fill a troubling gap in existing investigations of the causes of booms and busts."--Thomas H. Wilkins, Investment Professional

"Akerlof and Shiller's book is an interesting and thought-provoking attempt to understand how underlying human psychology drives the economy. The questions they pose and the examples they provide should be read by any economist seeking to better understand the differences between what economics predict will occur, and how people actually behave as individuals and within larger groups."--Dmitri Leybman, Midway Review

"Animal Spirits, which attempts to leverage the insights of behavioral economics to reanimate the vision of John Maynard Keynes, is perfectly timed for the present moment."--Nick Schulz, Wilson Quarterly

"Animal Spirits is exceptional in showing how economics can be accessible and relevant in dealing with this awesome challenge."--Irish Times

"George Akerlof and Robert Shiller have offered an attractive road map for a macroeconomics that might be inspired by the recent financial crisis."--Romar Correa, Economic & Political Weekly

"I believe this book to be best suited for those individuals who come from different fields but have a keen interest in economics and finance."--Kristina Vasileva, Journal of General Management

"It is perhaps the ultimate compliment to suggest that Russia's greatest writer would very much have agreed with Barany's depiction of the Russian military--and that his approach is a superior one for understanding Russian military politics."--John P. Moran, Perspectives on Politics

"More important than the timeliness of the book was the legacy that it leaves behind. This book helps us to understand as never before how macroeconomics really works."--Stan C. Weeber, Journal of Global Analysis

"Akerlof and Shiller deserve at least two cheers--one for providing a more solid psychological foundation for our understanding of confidence and another for re-introducing such an important concept into mainstream macroeconomics."--Martin Rapetti, Eastern Economic Journal

From the Back Cover

"This book is a sorely needed corrective. Animal Spirits is an important--maybe even a decisive--contribution at a difficult juncture in macroeconomic theory."--Robert M. Solow, Nobel Prize-winning economist

"This book is dynamite. It is a powerful, cogent, and convincing call for a fundamental reevaluation of basic economic principles. It presents a refreshingly new understanding of important economic phenomena that standard economic theory has been unable to explain convincingly. Animal Spirits should help set in motion an intellectual revolution that will change the way we think about economic depressions, unemployment, poverty, financial crises, real estate swings, and much more."--Dennis J. Snower, president of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy

"Animal Spirits makes a very timely and significant contribution to the development of a new dominant paradigm for economics that acknowledges the imperfections of human decision making, a need which the panic in financial markets makes all too apparent. I am not aware of any other book like this one."--Diane Coyle, author of The Soulful Science: What Economists Really Do and Why It Matters

"Akerlof and Shiller explore how animal spirits contribute to the performance of the macroeconomy. The range of issues they cover is broad, including the business cycle, inflation and unemployment, the swings in financial markets and real estate, the existence of poverty, and the way monetary policy works. This book is provocative and persuasive."--George L. Perry, Brookings Institution

Book Review: Animal Spirits
By Will Alexander
Economists, in pursuit of mathematical precision, seem to have forgotten that not everything can be easily counted. Traditional economic theory centers on the premise that people make perfectly rational decisions. People, however, are not so rational. Despite many attempts, not every variable that goes into our decision-making process can be easily quantified, weighted, and stuffed into a formula. As any non-economist knows psychology -- and its hard to measure variables -- plays a large role in how people make decisions.

George Akerlof and Robert Shiller's book, Animal Spirits, offers an accessible look at how traditional economics can be expanded by incorporating some basic concepts from psychology. The term "animal spirits," originally coined John Maynard Keynes in the 1930's, describes how impulses and emotions naturally lead to economic boom and bust cycles. Traditional economists seem to have ignored even the most primitive of these spirits.

Economists create impressively complex formulas attempting to accurately describe the state of the economy and predict future trends. However, there are just too many unquantifiable variables - feelings, emotions, intuition, and confidence- to accurately incorporate all available information into a simple neat equation. Incorporating psychology into economics may not sound like much of a breakthrough. But Akerlof and Shiller have stepped outside of current economic thought to gently nudge animal spirits back to the discipline.

The first part of the book offers five examples of animal spirits: confidence; corruption; money illusion; stories; and fairness. While there are many more psychological factors at work in decisions, these offer a step in the right direction. A quick look at the internet bubble shows how these spirits can unknowingly influence our decisions.

In the late 1990's, investors were confident in a "new economy" and drove the price of internet related stocks up far more than a reasonable estimation of their economic prospects would justify. As the stock market increased in value, we entered a positive-feedback cycle from our investment decisions that further increased our confidence. As confidence rose so did the markets. In the end, we all know how this cycle turned out.

In the second part of the book Akerlof and Shiller answer some big questions calling attention to the role of the animal spirits. Why do economies fall into depression? Why is saving for the future so arbitrary? Why is there unemployment? Why are financial prices so volatile? Why do real estate markets go through cycles? Why is there special poverty amongst minorities?

The book offers persuasive, well-researched, prose that challenges the conventional wisdom that underlines much of existing economic theory. In attempting to answer some large fundamental economic questions by calling attention to psychological influences, the book offers a first glimpse of what economic solutions might look like in the future.

Disappointing
By P. Johnson
Let me edit my review slightly. Please notice the first words of my original review: "Given such accomplished economists." I don't think it's unreasonable to hold these authors to a very high standard. Because I know that they could have done a much better job of organizing their thoughts, and given the stakes involved at an early stage in the development of financial crisis when policy makers were in dire need of good advice, I was very critical. Consider this - in a book on "Animal Spirits" there is very little on entrepreneurship! BTW Keynes did not originate the term, and Adam Smith was not an uncritical apologist for capitalists. Milton Friedman was not a blind apologists for corporations, and Ronald Reagan was not as radically free-market as people these days think. Gosh, how many times do these things need to be said?

Given such accomplished economists, and being sympathetic to behavioral economics I expected better from this volume. The book has obviously been rushed to print. There are numerous errors. Just to give a few examples:

They present Adam Smith as the father of the rational economic man model when in fact he was the author of "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" (a masterwork of psychology) and certainly never claimed that emotions did not matter for economics.

They present Keynes as having "animal spirits" at the center of his theories which is not true. They do not even give the background to the phrase, which was more than two hundred years old at the time Keynes wrote.

They completely misrepresent the work of Milton Friedman generally and with respect to the Great Depression specifically. They even get his ideas about money illusion wrong. They seem hopelessly confused about the difference between Friedman and the later "rational expectations" theory. In fact there is surprisingly little about modern macroeconomics including modern Keynesian thought.

Did they even read Friedman's great work on the Monetary History of the United States? They make a single reference in passing to it in the text. It is extremely meticulous in tracking the events of the Great Depression. Even J.K. Galbraith highly praised it as a work of empirical research.

Although they discuss bubbles and speculation the general reader would finish the book with no idea that experimental economists have been replicating and studying these phenomena in the lab for over 20 years and have discovered many things about what contributes to them. This is part of the authors' pattern of setting up mainstream economics as a straw man with no concern for psychology.

A more fundamental flaw is that they never make a persuasive case that animal spirits are the core of the problem. Yes there are many historical anecdotes and stories - but there is no overall scheme or theory in this book. It's a mess of disconnected thoughts, stories, anecdotes etc..

On a final note, there is a degree of condescension to the general reader which is quite irritating. For example, in discussing poker in the introduction we are informed that players often try to deceive their opponents and this is called ... "bluffing." (!)

In summary, a book that was rushed to market.

An addendum - just happened to pull the book off my shelf in July 2012. Was I too harsh before? I opened a chapter at random. Chapter nine - the authors try to argue that Friedman was wrong about there being no long run inflation/unemployment tradeoff. Somehow, in all this chapter, they manage to never once reference the ruinous stagflation of the 1970s! Instead they want to fuss about the difference between a 1.5% inflation target rate vs. a 0% inflation target rate. They invoke a lecture by Paul Samuelson - in 1964. Let me contrast that with Keynes biographer Robert Skidelsky in "The Return of the Master": "Milton Friedman predicted the coming of simultaneous increases in inflation and unemployment - so-called stagflation - as early as 1962." Even the most Keynesian of Keynesians agrees that at least on this one point Friedman had it right. No, I was not too harsh.

Including the Irrational in Macroeconomics
By Timothy J. Bartik
"Animal Spirits" is an important contribution to rethinking economic theory, particularly macroeconomic theory, so that it better takes account of human irrationality.

The central argument of the book is that various human emotions - overconfidence, unwarranted pessimism, a sense of fairness, and stigma effects - can have important aggregate effects on the economy. Economists have often tended to overlook these factors, for several reasons: the irrational is difficult to model, and it has sometimes been assumed that these "irrationalities" will average out or be weeded out by the market. But Akerlof and Shiller argue that frequently such "animal spirits" can result in self-reinforcing cycles of either boom or bust. Irrationality is not only not tamed by the market, but can even be reinforced.

Akerlof and Shiller consider varied topics in this book, including determinants of savings rates and wages, and high African-American poverty. However, most of the book focuses on how "animal spirits" might help better explain the business cycle. Their book is opportune, as the current downturn is plausibly explained as the result of the excesses of an unregulated speculative fever in housing and related investments. Their book includes a valuable postscript to one of the chapters that analyzes possible responses to the current financial crisis.

I think this book is best suited to an audience that is reasonably well-aware of economic ideas about markets and the macroeconomy. This of course includes professional economists as well as many policy wonks interested in macroeconomic policy. It would also be a valuable corrective for a wider audience that holds the belief that the market is always in the aggregate efficient. This book supplies one more valuable argument for some government intervention in the market: the need for regulation to discourage various sorts of speculative bubbles.

Negative Binomial Regression, by Joseph M. Hilbe

At last - a book devoted to the negative binomial model and its many variations. Every model currently offered in commercial statistical software packages is discussed in detail - how each is derived, how each resolves a distributional problem, and numerous examples of their application. Many have never before been thoroughly examined in a text on count response models: the canonical negative binomial; the NB-P model, where the negative binomial exponent is itself parameterized; and negative binomial mixed models. As the models address violations of the distributional assumptions of the basic Poisson model, identifying and handling overdispersion is a unifying theme. For practising researchers and statisticians who need to update their knowledge of Poisson and negative binomial models, the book provides a comprehensive overview of estimating methods and algorithms used to model counts, as well as specific guidelines on modeling strategy and how each model can be analyzed to access goodness-of-fit.

"The test is well-written, easy-to-read but once started, is difficult to put down as each chapter unfolds the intracacies of the distribution."
C.M. O'Brien, International Statistical Review

"A good starting point for those who are not familiar with this topic... I would recommend this book to researchers and students who would like to gain an overview of the negative binomial distribution and its extensions."

A very thorough and clearly written reference on negative binomial regression.
By Hanjoo Kim
"Negative Binomial Regression" is an excellent reference for any statisticians, practitioners and students who are working and/or interested in the subject. I highly recommend this book. There are numerous features and strengths. Here I summarize some important ones as follow:

1. This book is very through in the topic of negative binomial regression which makes it an invaluable source for both researchers and practitioners.
2. As with other books written by Hilbe, e.g. Generalized Estimating Equations, this book is also very clearly written, easy-to-read and understand with minimal background in elementary maximum likelihood theory and calculus.
3. This book focuses on application of various NB models, but it contains enough mathematical details to show proper elements in the derivation of each model explained.
4. The book does an excellent job in describing almost all the practical encounters of when to use and what to use NB regression models.
5. Most of the programs used in this book are in either Stata, or user written program, called "ado" files that are readily downloadable from the website.

Hilbe discusses the derivation of the model from 2 perspectives - as a Poisson-gamma mixture model, and, with the heterogeneity parameter set as a constant, as a full member of the exponential family of distributions. As such the NB, actually the NB-2, model is a member of the family of generalized linear models, and is now found in most all GLM software implications.

The book discusses most every NB parameterization conceived, and provides details and examples of every commercial NB software application, including NB longitudinal and mixed models. It is clearly written, yet covers details mostly unavailable in other texts.

I think that an overview of content would be very helpful. Here I provide the book content in detail:

comprehensive but with confusing notation
By CA hiker
This book is a comprehensive description of when and how to apply negative binomial statistical models to count data. Through many examples using the Stata statistics system, the book addresses common practical issues such as censored data and excessive numbers of zero counts. Especially useful is chapter four's discussion of overdispersion in statistical models, which identifies negative binomial regression as one among several approaches to this problem.

This book is a good reference for readers already familiar with count models such as Poisson regression, but others will find the book challenging. For example, much of the discussion assumes familiarity with generalized linear modeling (GLM) concepts, such as link functions and exponential families. These concepts are used intensively throughout chapter two but not described until section 2.3, and then only tersely. The book would be much more accessible if section 2.3 summarized the GLM concepts and modeling notation used later in the book, and was placed at the beginning of the chapter. Moreover, the notation is unnecessarily confusing. In particular, there's no clear indication of which variables correspond to scalars, vectors of observations or model parameters, or matrices. The ranges of indices in sums are often unstated, e.g., whether they range over the data observations, the explanatory variables or the model parameters. Many equations have a confusing mix of traditional mathematical and programming language notation, including the summaries of the models in the appendices. Adding to readers' difficulties are numerous typos throughout the text (even in the corrected printing of 2008). This lack of proofreading is below the standards of other technical publications from Cambridge University Press. These notation issues and the typos are minor, but potentially confusing to non-expert readers who may not easily figure out what the author really meant.

The word "earlier" and "previously" are overly used in the text
By Academic Book Reviewer
This review is only focused on the inexact reference style of the text and various other issues mentioned below(2nd edition). These problems hinders me to understand more technical details that addressed in the book. Only after the authors fix these inexact references, I'll be able to understand the book better to have a more comprehensive review on the book.

I found the word "earlier" and "previously" (or "previous") overly used in the books. According to my count, there are over 10 "earlier"s and about 30 "previously"s (or "previous"es). For example,

1. As seen earlier, an individual or observation level format may be converted to grouped format by using code similar to the following: (page 120)

2. This topic, with graphs, was discussed earlier. (page 167)

3. As previously mentioned, GLIM was the first commercial software implementation of GLM. (page 20)

4. Additionally, as previously discussed, both Poisson and negative binomial models can themselves be extended to address the specific reasons why overdispersion arises in the data. (page 74)

5. As previously discussed, two foremost methods used to accommodate Poisson overdispersion are post-hoc scaling and application of a modified variance estimator. (page 110)

In addition, when a book is referred it is better to refer the section number as well.

1. However, as discussed in Cameron and Trivedi (1998) these models are not appropriate for count response models. (page 191)

Some implicit references like the following should also be spelled out so that reader can see where they were first discussed.

1. I have indicated that extended negative binomial models are generally developed to solve either a distributional or variance problem arising in the base NB-2 model. (page 160)

2. I shall use the well-known ships data set that was used in McCullagh and NeIder (1989). (page 200)

For reference to equation, it should specify equation number.

1. Note the similarity to that of the standard Poisson log-likelihood function defined in Chapter 3 as ... (page 200)

These inexact references can take readers who are not familiar with the text yet a lot of time to figure out where "earlier" or "previously" the author actually refers. Since the author read reviews on Amazon, I'd suggest the author post on the book website a table (could be in the errata) of explicit references (e.g., by giving page numbers, section numbers, or equation numbers) these inexact references refer to.

This would be a relative easy task for the author (I'd estimate 1-2 hour work, by searching the word "earlier", "previously", "previous" book referencs in the digital text and writing up the table) but could help an average reader a lot.

Also the terminology seems not very consistent in some places. I found "bootstrapped standard errors" (page 198), "bootstrapping of standard errors" (page 5) and "boostrap standard error" (section 4.3.4 title).

Some acronyms appear before the whole words are spelled out. For example, GEE on page 3.

Typo:
Eq (10.2) L(x beta_i; y_i) should be L(beta_i; y_i) (page 199), so does the equation right on the next page (page 200)
Also Eq(10.2), X_ik should be x_ik.
The index of the second sum sign in Eq (10.2) should be at the bottom.

The first entry in the reference (as shown below) is not unpublished. It is published as Sociological Methodology Volume 32, Issue 1, pages 247-265, 2002
Allison, P. D. and R. Waterman (2002). Fixed-effects negative binomial regression models, unpublished manuscript

Although there are already many typos been corrected in the errata, I think that a professional editor should be hired to work on the text a bit more.

The Anthroposophical Understanding of the Soul, by F. W. Van Emmichoven, F. W. Zeylmans van Emmichoven

Use of the word soul to denote the inner world of human experience has not been fashionable in recent psychology. In this ground-breaking study, however, the author stresses that our inner life is always active as a whole entity, which calls for recognition of the human soul as a being. Drawing on ideas of Goethe, Brentano, Husserl, Scheler, and Rudolf Steiner, Zeylmans van Emmichoven uses the soul's own self-perception as his method of clarifying the mysteries of the inner life.

What does he find? "The soul as an inner world participates in two worlds: an external world and...a still deeper, interior world." The soul is revealed as a mediator between the outer physical world (including the body) and the inner core of the human being, the "I." Through its intentional relationship to these two worlds, an ever-shifting stream of dynamic polarities continually courses through the soul: love-hate, joy-sorrow, pleasure-displeasure, desire-satisfaction, laughing-weeping, life-consciousness.

In a compact and lively style, other soul processes are similarly examined, including doubt, volition, mental images, perceiving, judgment and decision, spatial-temporal experience, and sexual identity. The language of dreams is discussed and ordered into four types. The expressive capacity of the soul in speech, posture, temperament, and character is treated with subtlety.

The author also proposes another dimension to psychology in the notion of the soul's drive for development, which unfolds through the Goethean laws of polarity, enhancement, and metamorphosis. He paints a profound picture of the higher goal of human life: the soul's gradual liberation from physical bonds to become an organ for the Self, always balanced by the soul's inclination to become an organ for the body. Along this unfinished journey, toward a full human existence, the author depicts the roles of love, wisdom, and inner death and resurrection. As the author points out, there is an area where psychology and philosophy of life overlap and cannot be entirely separated.

Excellent book, by somebody who takes the soul seriously and understands what he is writing about.

Willem Zeylmans van Emmichoven's lectures were usually well-attended and he spoke authoritatively as a psychiatrist out of a deep understanding of Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy or Spiritual Science. For anybody who wants to move away from materialistic concepts of the soul, this book is a good starting point to break the spell, as Zeylmans could make unusual ways of looking at the world rather transparent and understandable. He was a very experienced and enthusiastic lecturer and a clear thinker.

An American Story: Pietro DiDonato's «Christ in Concrete» (Studies in Southern Italian and Italian American Culture), by Louis

This text closely examines Pietro DiDonato's classic novel Christ in Concrete from an historical, sociological and literary perspective. Louise Napolitano examines Christ in Concrete (1939) as a chronicle of the experience of Italian immigrants in the United States during the twenties and early thirties. The literary analysis involves a thematic and stylistic study, focusing on the work's modern, realistic, naturalistic, romantic and classic qualities. In addition, this study places Christ in Concrete in both the American as well as the Italian American literary tradition.

Review
-Over fifty years after its first publication, my father's novel 'Christ in Concrete' finally has an inspired interpretation set down for review in our time and future generations.- (Richard DiDonato)
-Napolitano has produced a significant contribution to American literary studies. This pioneering study will benefit students, teachers and scholars alike. Her insight into the Italian and American contexts of DiDonato's masterpiece is certain to generate renewed interest in, and new readings of, this classic American writer. 'An American Story' is a major breakthrough for American cultural studies.- (Fred L. Gardaphe, Columbia College, Chicago)
-Louise Napolitano's thematic study on Pietro DiDonato's life and work skillfully traces the Italian pilgrim's thirst in the new world for learning in order to free himself and his own ghettoized province from bondage. The self-made man of the Renaissance, the all-knowing artist and intellectual born outside of any academic schooling, he appears to be resurrected with enduring love and personal sacrifice by the immigrant that DiDonato mirrored with his art, and critically reconstucted by Louise Napolitano in her own book.- (Giose Rimanelli)
-Ultimately Napolitano does what a good critic should do, engage the artist and other interested parties in intelligent conversation that makes reading a communal event.- (Fred L. Gardaphe, Voices in Italian Americana)

The colorful boyhood of a popular author comes to life in this personal account

Imagine learning from a nosy classmate that your mother is having yet another baby. To Ralph's classmates, news of one more Fletcher baby is just "scuttlebutt." But for Ralph, the oldest of nine, being part of a large family means more kids to join in the fun―from making tripods in the woods and "snicking" up the rug to raising chicks and even discovering a meteor (well, maybe). It doesn't feel like there's life beyond Marshfield, Massachusetts. Then one day Dad's new job moves the family to Chicago, and there's so much Ralph has to leave behind. In this humorous and captivating memoir, Ralph Fletcher traces the roots of his storytelling.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–Fletcher reminisces about growing up in Marshfield, VT, recalling boyhood friendships, sibling attachments, and romps through the woods. We found all kinds of mushrooms. Some were edible, others were poisonous toadstools. Mom said to think of them as strangers–some are good, some are bad, and since you couldn't tell the difference it was best to leave them alone. Fletcher grew up in a Catholic family that grew larger each year, and when another baby was on the way, he'd learn the news from a girl in his class. Family and friendships were fulfilling, enriching, and perplexing. The author thinks about the loss of Dad's goodnight kisses as he grew up, and the adolescent predicament of being pressed between a girl's body and a wall that housed a giant beehive. Fletcher's connection to nature and the environment infuse every aspect of his life. Written with sagacious eloquence and gentle humor, this work stands strong in the ranks of authors' memoirs and autobiographies. –Alison Follos, North Country School, Lake Placid, NY

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. Fletcher, author of numerous books, including some on the writing process, pens a dreamy reminiscence of growing up in the 1950s and 1960s in a Massachusetts coastal town. The oldest of his nine siblings, he notes that his "Mom had a baby every year." Embarrassingly enough, a know-it-all classmate usually informed him a new addition was on the way because Mom tended to tell her friends first. This bumper crop of siblings made for some boisterously good times, marked by escapades with backyard roosters and games in the woods. Readers may be particularly intrigued by Fletcher's memories of his great-grandmother, who buried the kids' old teeth in the garden. Many of the vignettes have a choppy style and a heavy nostalgic tone, but for readers who enjoy imagining what it was like to be a kid in days of yore, this has a certain charm. Anne O'Malley

Funny, warm, poignant author memoir
By Deborah
In 35 short chapters, Ralph Fletcher shares stories of his childhood neighborhood, family, and friends. Covering topics that include a description of his neighborhood, his feelings and memories of the important people in his life, games he played, school days, pets, and childhood illnesses, this story kept me entranced from start to finish. I loved the author's simple yet moving revelation of his own feelings, especially the poignant chapter about his father, "Last Kiss."

Publisher information sets reader age at grades 5 to 8, but the kid-friendly layout of this book will appeal to readers in grades 2-4, particularly if read aloud. Teens working on author reports or personal essays will find the book interesting as well. Teachers will find this memoir a handy tool in writing workshops, if used in conjunction with specific writing topics such as description, characterization, or dialogue. Fletcher's use of details brings his stories to life. Student writers can learn much about turning ordinary life events and feelings into effective stories.

As an adult reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It's got a little something for every reader. I can't recommend this book enough for teachers. If you assign journal writing for young writers, this book will provide infinite topic inspiration.

By Cynthia Hudson
Children's author Ralph Fletcher seemed to live an ideal life for a child. The oldest of a large clan in the small town of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Fletcher had nearby woods to roam in, numerous bothers and neighbors to recruit for games, and parents who loved him. Fletcher recounts stories from his young days in Marshfield Dreams: When I Was a Kid.

Like Fletcher's other books, this memoir is written for young readers aged 9 to 12. But moms and dads (and younger kids too) will be equally charmed and drawn in by accounts of mud puppies, raising chickens, new babies arriving almost every year, and bouts of chicken pox and mumps. As I read I found myself wanting to visit Fletcher's home on Acorn St. myself and explore all the areas he talked about. Reading Marshfield Dreams with your child could bring up stories to share from your own childhood. Kids of today are likely to marvel at the relative freedom children had growing up in the `60s and the amount of time many of them spent outdoors.

The chapters are short and accessible. It's also fun to look at the family photos that appear at the start of each chapter. Fletcher's family moved away from Marshfield to Chicago when he was 13. This tribute to his boyhood home shows how much his life on Acorn St. continues to live on in his memory.

Memorable Moments
By Book Addict
As a teacher, I find Fletcher's collection of small moments to be a great teaching resource. Each short story is carefully crafted with great detail. I use this book to model writing small moments. The children in my class ask me to read a story before writing or when they "get stuck." Marshfield Dreams is a must have for teaching small moments or memoirs.
