A very interesting historical novel about a slave woman's struggle for freedom in early Rome

Anna Lowenstein has written a very interesting and well-researched historical novel about a young Dorotrigan girl named Bivana who is captured by Roman troops in southern Britain and sent to Rome as a slave. There Bivan overcomes one hardship after another, including the loss of her parents and siblings, abuse, persecution and the loss of her own her son and finally succeeds in gaining her freedom. What makes the story especially interesting is that it takes place during an important period in early Roman history--the dawn of the Christian era-- with the appearance of the proto-Christian Nazarene sect of Judaism between the Roman conquest of Britain (43-57 AD) and the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD. The description of the physical setting of Bivana's quest for freedom, the customs, the food, the architecture is also meticulously researched and laid out which makes this story well worth reading for for those with a desire to learn more about what life was like in that important period of history.
