Imaginative, impressive, not all morally injurious
By M. J. JACKSON
First of all this is really a review of the trilogy and not The Golden Compass on its own - (I prefer the British title Northern Lights and I wonder why it has a different title in North America?).

Its been a long time since I read a book ostensibly for children, possibly the last time was when I was an actual child unless you count a couple of adult re-readings of Tolkien - but I felt I had to read it to know what the fuss was about - both from the ample praise given to these books by critics and also some of the controversy they seem to have provoked - some of which is touched on in these reviews. And yeah I was impressed - I felt genuinely gripped by the plot and went out and bought both sequels right after reading Northern Lights and read them all in a day and its not everyday I do that. Incidentally I don't want to sound like I'm boasting but the last few books I read included Jorge Luis Borges, Albert Camus and Umberto Eco - all fairly grown up, intellectual authors so the previous reviewer's comment that the only people who'd enjoy this are either children or just stupid is just blatantly untrue. There is so much to admire in these works - the creation of Lyra's world with its alternative version of history, the interesting touch of the daemons and the way they represent the characters' natures, the depiction of the frozen north with its Panserborne and witches etc was just fascinating, along with the other parallel worlds visited over the trilogy (though Lyra's is the most fully realised I think) as was the whole underlying framework of Pullman's universe with its blend of theoretical physics, William Blake, Paradise lost, theology etc - you have to salute Pullman's creativity and imagination here. Neither did I agree with some comments about the writing style which I actually thought was quite good - I didn't have any problems with the characterisation, dialogue, descriptions etc - all a lot better than Tolkien for example IMHO. Having said that the trilogy wasn't perfect - I thought part one was better than the others and part three was perhaps slightly weaker - having created this imaginary universe and built up the plot over the first two volumes I think it was hard for Pullman to bring it all to a conclusion in a way that fully did justice the brilliance of the underlying concepts which is why I'm not giving it five stars. Also there were too many deus ex machina moments where characters were rescued by the excessively timely intervention of some ally. But I really, truly enjoyed reading this trilogy and found several things to ponder on afterwards - if I had read it as a child it would undoubtedly had been one of my all time favourites.

Amazon is not an appropriate forum for political or religious discussion but I am a little saddened and amazed at some of the comments made by some reviewers which if anything unintentionally show just how right Pullman is on many things. The last book I reviewed on Amazon was Eco's The Name of the Rose which deals with heresy in the middle ages - reading some reactions you can see how little the world has moved on in some ways with people as quick as ever to shout "burn the heretic!" the minute they see something they disagree with, however imperfectly they have understood it. Some of the comments seem bizarre - the vague accusation of "pederasty" seems bizarre - I must have missed the child pornography section of this work. I certainly knew about sex and love (or thought I did) at age 13 as did most people and the rather tender blossoming of love between Will and Lyra is handled with such delicacy (there is in fact no actual sex here as far as I can see) that this says far more about the people making the claims than it does about the actual book. As for the accusation that Pullman is ignorant and believes Calvin was a catholic pope(!) this seems to stem from someone flicking through the book looking for something to get annoyed about rather than reading it - I would have thought that the idea that this is a parallel universe with a substantially different history from ours (eg in which the Reformation never happened) is something that most people would grasp in a few short pages and I'm pretty sure that Oxford Professor Pullman knows that Calvin was never pope. I don't believe there is much misogyny here either (I think a confusion between the briefly expressed views of an immature character who living in a backward world and those of the author)

As for the anticlericalism - well clearly Pullman IS against rigid authoritarian systems of religious thought but again this is set in a parallel universe where the church is really standing in for any number of real theocratic regimes from the medieval catholic church (who did far worse things than mentioned in this book incidentally eg the brutal suppression of the Cathars in the Albigensian crusade - "Kill them all! God will recognise his own!" - this quote is from a real Catholic bishop about what to do with the civilian prisoners -women, children etc in a captured Cathar town) to the secular theocracies of the Soviet Union and the Third Reich. I don't think he is actually personally accusing the late John Paul II of trying to surgically amputate children's souls here - that seems a depressingly literal take on things - so literal in fact you wonder why some people bother reading fiction? Or even manage to function on a day to day basis in a world filled with metaphor?

Frankly given all the fuss I was expecting this book to be far more heretical and religion-bashing than it actually was. I suppose people like a friend of mine's cousins who ban Christmas tree fairies for being "satanic" and consider the Disney movie "Pocahontas" to be a work of the devil will probably not like it. Personally I consider this book to be quite a moral work though not in a preachy or dogmatic manner and in a way which also recognises shades of grey - it seems to stress the right qualities that I would certainly like any child of mine to learn - tolerance, friendship, love, the courage to do what is right, to be sceptical about dogma and not to be blindly obedient to authority - someone disapproved of this book because of the last point - well after the history of the 20th century with the Soviet union, Third Reich etc I'm quite surprised that some people still think that unthinkingly following orders is such a great idea. In any case there is another famous work where the protagonist takes on the religious and secular powers that be - its called "The New Testament". In the real world the battle between the Kingdom and the Republic rages on as it does fictionally and personally I think Jesus might not have been on the side that many seem to think he would've. As for the anti-God theme in later parts of the trilogy - well for starters the "God" of these books is clearly shown not to be the creator God of Christianity and the "bad guys" are those who have usurped him and used his authority for their ends as many have in human history. Asriel's war against God is shown to be misguided and missing the point in any case. Pullman IS anti-organised religion and he IS an atheist but I think some people have just simply misread him in their outrage and tried to simplify what he is actually saying to make it easier to dismiss

I could go on but what's the point? The bottom line is that if you think you won't like this because of its moral or religious take on things you almost certainly won't - though I notice my UK edition has a rather glowing quote from a review by The Church Times which suggests that not all believers are as outraged as some. As for me I thought it was gripping, highly imaginative and thoroughly enjoyable.

PS this book was recommended to me by a Christian.

What's it doing in the Children's Section?
By BookBuzz
What's it doing in the Children's Section? Is it simply that children are at the heart of this fable? Be forewarned, this is a rich and complex tale with themes that examine the creation and structure of the universe, good and evil, and the very meaning of life and death. While cloaked in the trappings of an epic odyssey, the language, violence, and themes make this a book most suitable for mature young readers and adults.
"His Dark Materials" is not only "Dust" --the fear of which propels this story -- but it is the dark recesses of human nature. Pullman questions our views of the world, science, religion and ourselves. It is bold enough to make a clear philosophical stand, which the reader, like Lyra, comes to understand over the course of this journey through multiple universes and the inner depths of human spirit.
So why is this book in the Children's Section? Perhaps it's because it requires a mind not set firmly in its ways -- a mind that can jump from idea to idea as quickly as Lyra's daemon can change shapes.

From DUST thou art!
By L. Feld
Whew! I just finished reading all three of Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" books in a little over a week (I couldn't put them down!), and I'm still trying to absorb all of this. My initial reaction: this is going to be an all-time classic, and certainly not just of "young adult" or "fantasy" books (Phillip Pullman himself has stated many times that he can't read "fantasy," because it "doesn't tell [him] anything interesting about being a human being." While it is certainly different than the "Lord of the Rings," it is NOT AT ALL ridiculous to place Pullman's creation in the same pantheon as Tolkien's, which is something I swear I never thought that I would say. Anyway, the bottom line is that this trilogy is an amazing, mind-blowing, fascinating, exciting, heartbreaking, work of transcendent brilliance, and it starts with the story of Lyra, somewhat inaccurately titled, "The Golden Compass" (I guess that sounds better than "The Alethiometer" or "Lyra vs. the Gobblers" or something, but I strongly prefer the British title, "Northern Lights"). Also, the marketing of this book is very strange - if you look at the cover you might think this was some warm, fuzzy children's adventure story about a girl and her pet bear. Not!!! Instead, how about Phillip Pullman's dark take on creation and extended riff on multiple themes raised in John Milton's "Paradise Lost" and the Book of Genesis. The bottom line: if Phillip Pullman is mainly for children, than so are John Milton and the Bible! I don't think so....
Anyway, "The Golden Compass"/"Northern Lights" tells the story of a plucky, wild, courageous, amazing 12-year old girl named Lyra Belacqua, her beloved daemon Pantalaimon, her alethiometer (and all that it helps her discover about "Dust" -- and other things), her powerful, ambitious, complex, and dangerous parents (Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter), political intrigue in a world VERY much like our own in crucial ways, evil experiments on kidnapped children and their daemons, fascinating people called "gyptians" (water gypsies), theology and the Church, a window on a parallel universe (and the quest to find out what exists there), angels, witches, and an amazing bear named Iorek Byrnison. Is that enough material for you for one book? And how about put all that material into the hands of an author who is a great storyteller! The result, as I've said before: a CLASSIC!!
Just three other points. First, this trilogy inevitably is going to be compared to (and possibly overshadowed by) another "young adult" series out these days, which you might have heard of...I think it's called, uh, "Harry Potter" or something like that. Anyway, not to disparage "Harry Potter" or anything, because that's a pretty good series of books, but "Harry Potter" is merely a cute, whimsical, well-told tale of a boy and his adventures compared to Phllip Pullman's very dark, amazing, even disturbing creation (especially if you have a closed mind towards explorations of God, religion, the Church and the nature of man - all the interesting and important things, in other words)!
Second, I absolutely love Pullman's writing style (what a great storyteller!), as well as his use of words and names. He apparently has put a LOT of thought into this! For instance, take the main character, Lyra. I looked it up in the dictionary and found that "Lyra" is a constellation in the NORTHERN Hemisphere near Cygnus ("northern CROSS") and Hercules (child of the highest Greek God, Zeus, and Alcmene, a hero of extraordinary strength who won immortality by performing the 12 labors demanded by Hera). Interesting... Also, the constellation "Lyra" is located near the Corona BOREALIS. Finally, "Lyra" sounds awfully much like "liar," which is Lyra Belacqua's main skill (besides reading the alethiometer), and one in which she takes great pride. Coincidence? Hmmmm...I don't think so! Also, just to intrigue us further, Pullman names his Lyra's father "Asriel," which is similar to "Israel", which according to my dictionary is the name given to Jacob by the angel with whom he wrestled; perhaps literally "God struggles"). Double hmmmmm! Finally, we've got Mrs. "Coulter," and guess what that means? Well, according to my trusty dictionary again, a "coulter" is a BLADE or wheel on a plow for making VERTICAL CUTS in the sod (from Latin culter, KNIFE). Cool!
Third, maybe we all should read (or reread) Milton's "Paradise Lost" (and the Book of Genesis) before/after we read "The Golden Compass", because there's no doubt that Phillip Pullman has borrowed freely from Milton's all-time classic take on Creation, God, Satan, free will, the temptation in the Garden of Eden, and the "Fall" of man into "Sin" (among other things). Before the book even begins, we have an epigraph from "Paradise Lost," specifically the scene where Satan surveys the unformed potential of the Creator. Given this, it should not be surprising to anyone familiar with "Paradise Lost" (or the Bible, for that matter) that "The Golden Compass" leads us ever northwards, since the rebel angel, Satan, repaired to the NORTHERN realms. Meanwhile, don't forget that in "Paradise Lost" the angels (at God's command) tilt the Earth's axis so that man will have to endure extreme hot and cold seasons, instead of the constant temperate climate which existed before the Fall. Meanwhile, in "Paradise Lost," Sin and Death construct - with God's permission -- a bridge (window?) for easy passageway between Hell and Earth, through which they promise to infect the Earth and to corrupt all living things with Death and Sin. Veeeerrrry interesting!!! In interviews, Phillip Pullman has confirmed that the biblical Creation story, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and "Paradise Lost" are major sources for "His Dark Materials" trilogy, and that the title itself comes from the following quote: "Unless the almighty maker them ordain / His dark materials to create more worlds." Read "The Golden Compass" if you want a great story, if you want to be challenged, amazed, intrigued, and moved (as long as you're not one of these strange, closed-minded, disturbing, Oblation Board types who I see here and there on this site criticizing Pullman for "bigotry" or "blasphemy" or some other ridiculous thing!). And OF COURSE read it if you're curious to know more about "dust" -- "our final rest and native home..."

Defending the Undefendable II: Freedom in All Realms, by Walter Block

Walter Block's daring, funny, iconoclastic Defending the Undefendable is a libertarian classic. In this sequel Block defends even more of society's hidden heroes, those unfairly maligned entrepreneurs, workers, and capitalists who create value through free and voluntary interaction, and he does it in the same colorful and engaging style. (Peter G. Klein)
Walter Block has assembled thirty chapters defending behavior that is probably offensive to most Americans, such as dwarf tossing and stereotyping, and many that are downright illegal, such as dueling and smuggling. Plus, he's provided us with humorous cartoons at the end of many chapters. The bottom line message in Freedom in All Realms: Defending the Undefendable is that the true test of our commitment to personal liberty doesn't come when we permit others to engage in those peaceable, voluntary acts with which we agree. It comes when we permit others to engage in peaceable, voluntary acts we find offensive. (Walter E. Williams)
In an age when all too many people run for cover when their controversial neighbors evoke the ire of intellectual elites, Walter Block heroically comes to the rescue. You don't have to agree with him on everything to respect his thoughtfulness on behalf of the unpopular and the misunderstood. Liberty's very survival depends upon such courage! (Lawrence W. Reed)
Walter Block is the most courageous of libertarian economists. No issue is too tough for the application of solid principles-and that makes him unique. I find him to be absolutely consistent in his logic, clear enough for anyone to grasp, and bold enough to take on any and all challengers. On top of it all, he's provocative and fun to read. (Ken Schoolland)
Defending the Undefendable: Freedom in All Realms is a worthy, indispensable sequel to DTU, written in a fun, punchy, and accessible style, but with no punches pulled. (Stephan Kinsella)

STILL A MUST HAVE Book for Arduino Hobbyists
By P. Fulmer
Having just started using the Arduino last summer, I can say that this is the ABSOLUTELY BEST book a person could get to become familiar with the Arduino. I've been an electronics hobbyist for years but mainly dealt with analog world with minimal interest in too much on the digital side. I did programming but never with a microprocessor until I got my Arduino last summer. Now I'm hooked. Unfortunately, the usual books for "helping" with Arduino give sketches and explain bits and pieces without ever doing an overview of the system. However, this book is fantastic. Just got it today and have read over half of it; I've marked it up with pen to remind myself of crucial facts that I wish I had known a few months back. I programmed in Fortran (antique language) and BASIC before, but never learned the C programming language (the language of the Arduino). Thankfully, this book assumes no knowledge of C language and holds your hand through the process. It does a wonderful job explaining what each section of the programming does, it explains the hardware of the board, and it explains how the board communicates with the computer. At long last, instead of just copying and pasting someone else's program and hoping I can modify it to work for my own purposes, I can understand WHY certain things work the way they do.

UPDATE: I've had this book for over five months, and I still maintain that you have GOT to have this book. I have used it so much that I've about worn it out. Yes, the info that is in the book can be found elsewhere, but he covers so much material so well in such logical places. If you're trying to understand how and why Arduino sketches work the way they do, BUY THIS BOOK!

UPDATE 2: I STILL stand by my review of almost a year ago. I have used this book so much in referring to things that I may have to order a second copy as insurance in case I misplace the first. To be such a small book, it packs a lot of punch. It's written at just the right level for beginners who are just learning about Arduino and microprocessors in general, and he points you to all the resources on the web for further information. The book is practical and useful and just plain fun to read. So instead of having to copy and paste everyone else's code all the time, read this book to understand at least the basics of WHY things work in an Arduino the way they do.

Great Book for Getting Started
By Amazon Customer
I've been using, and learning about, Arduino for a few months. I bought a few other books to help me get moving, and have not been very pleased with them. So, recently, I wanted to start trying to do some of the more difficult things with Arduino, like using data storage and Ethernet. I looked on various web sites for tutorials, and examples, and found that none of the ones I downloaded were very good examples. The Ethernet subject was probably the most difficult. Many example programs would work sometimes, and not other times. Some never worked at all. But, worst of all, some examples had so many errors that I gave up on trying to fix and recompile them, and was never able to load them to the Arduino.

Then, about a week ago, I saw this book by Simon Monk, and decided to order it, and give it a try. I have not regretted that move at all. The two best working Ethernet programs that I have found both came out of THIS book. I am using them as templates for building the more complicated applications I wanted. Unlike the other Ethernet examples I've had, Simon's examples both worked on the first try. I only had to change the IP address and MAC address in the program to point to my own Arduino devices. He has obviously tested them thoroughly before publishing them. How I wish everyone was that conscientious!

Then, as I started to use these programs as templates to build my applications, I found myself going back into Simon's book for more examples, and more explanations on other topics. I used more of his code examples as building blocks for my data storage, and other functionality. Again, the examples in this book are very simple and solid, and they WORK. That's exactly what you need to use as a framework to build your own applications.

This book is small, filled with solid, simple, working examples with good, concise explanations. It delivers on the title - it gets you started with some good sketches for various functionality. What you need to use, and need to know, is not buried in a huge textbook. A beginner doesn't need to wade through reams of technical details, hopelessly trying to pick out the parts they need. And beginners don't need a book full of flawed example code, either. They need a book like this one, that cuts to the chase, and gives them a solid beginning that works.

So, if you need some help getting started, this is a very good book for you. If you need the giant Arduino reference book, that covers everything under the sun in minute detail, then this is not for you.

For its intended audience, purpose, size, and cost, this has been an extremely helpful book for me.

Jump Start Your Arduino Experience
By Bruce
Why wait to connect your Arduino microcontroller development board to your Ethernet network? Or to use a full alphanumeric LCD display?

In fact why wait to learn the complications of the C language?

In 151 clear, easy-to-follow pages, the author more than makes good on his promise to help you get started with so-called sketches (computer programs) for Arduino. He actually gives you the building blocks to realize the original dream of Arduino -- namely electronics for the rest of us.

Through clear screenshots and black and white photos, even though this book is slim and only 8 inches tall, you will really get down to brass tacks. This book takes a friendly, over-the-shoulder approach to helping you write the code to do what you already know you want to do.

Overall, this is one of the simplest, yet most comprehensive introduction to the wonderful hobby of making things happen in the real world with the inexpensive, and now easy, Arduino system.

Valora Delos is a Hunter, charged with tracking the treacherous Soulstealers and bringing them to justice. Unlike the other fae of her kind, Valora was born with stunted wings that render her flightless, driving her to prove herself in the eyes of King Aric, with whom she has been infatuated since she first set eyes on him as a young prince.

She descends to Earth and finds herself trapped in suburban Seattle after the portal to her world closes. With the help of a sexy half-fae named Dooley, Valora must find her way back to save Dell'Aria. Dooley uses his own brand of magic to help Valora discover memories buried deep within her, which produce more questions than answers- questions about her growing attraction to Dooley and her devotion to her King. Uncovering who the Soulstealers are and who is behind the destruction of Dell'Aria brings Valora a truth she may not be ready to handle.

Heat Level: Sizzling Romance. Sensual, sexual and edgy. Sex scenes are detailed in their description. Sexual situations bump the boundaries but don't cross over into erotic romance. Sexual tension remains at a high level throughout.

Awesome!
By Sally Berneathy
Once you start reading FAE HUNTER, you won't be able to put it down. The action starts on the first page and never lets up for the entire book. Just when you think you can take a deep breath and maybe even put the book down for the evening, a new twist erupts that makes you keep reading for one more chapter and one more chapter and one more chapter...

Valora Delos is a compelling heroine who springs to life as a real person and takes the reader along on her complicated emotional journey of hope, disappointment, betrayal, trust and love as she battles to save her world and the people she cares about. I became completely involved with her, felt all her emotions with her. (I won't say what emotions and when they happened as I don't want to spoil any of the plot!)

I first read this book as a copyeditor and approached it from a purely technical standpoint. However, I was immediately hooked and had to keep reminding myself to be an objective editor rather than a captivated reader. Everything about this book is awesome...the story, the characters, the writing, the created world. I will be waiting...along with everybody else who reads this book...for the second in the series.

This First Book was Great and Got The Series Off With A Bang
By Douglas C. Meeks
After reading Fae Hunter (Soulstealer Trilogy #1) and then the novella Mane Attraction (A Soulstealer Novella (Book #1.5)) (which should NOT be skipped) Fae Guardian (Soulstealer Trilogy #2) was a "must-buy" since the story was enjoyable, passionate and at times a bit tragic but the heroine Valora just keeps on ticking. This story was as enthralling and full of twists and turns and for a series starter it was exceptional but in Fae Guardian (Soulstealer Trilogy #2) it takes a bit darker turn and much to my dismay the author has once again inserted Aric back into the fray and then to lessen my enjoyment even more added a lot of angst and even a Mnage trois which did nothing for my enjoyment of this book, but the story is so addicting I only dropped my rating about half a star. Obviously, those things won't bother other readers so adjust as you see fit. I should mention that the events at the end of book 1 are not totally as they seemed :) The series has about a 4.5/5 rating overall, the first book is exceptional, without the novella I think I would have been a bit lost about the Mane/Kit relationship while Fae Guardian (Soulstealer Trilogy #2) added tons to the story also added things I could have done without but I will still be waiting eagerly for the final book. This series is a keeper but be aware it gets a bit more erotic as the series progresses.

Fae Hunter
By Jasmyn9
Valora Delos has a chip on her shoulder, but she handles it in a good way. She tries to prove that she is just as good as any of the other fae out there. When a blight strikes the land of Dell'Aria, draining the magic of its people and eventually killing them, Valora quickly joins the Hunters. The Hunters are a team of Fae dedicated to tracking down those responsible for releasing the blight on their land, the Soulstealers.

Valora has always had a cruch on King Aric, so when he asks her to take on a special mission to Earth, normally a forbidden realm, to track down a Soulstealer that he believes will have the answers to it all, she jumps at the chance to prove herself to him. Little does she know that this one mission will turn several worlds upside down.

On Earth, she meets Dooley, a very woodsy and down to earth guy that seems to have a strange pull on her. This is where I thought the steamy stuff was going to start - but I was wrong. It got close - and I'm not going to tell with who - but then it just seemed to taper off before it was able to really get started.

The longer Valora spends on Earth, the more confused she becomes, and I did right along with her. I wasn't sure which guy I should be cheering for, who the Soulstealer was, or if Valora would even be able to figure it out. The characters she meets along the way, both from Earth and Dell'Aria, were fantastic, but seemed to muddle things further by putting their own opinions out there trying to influence Valora's opinions.

For hard core romance fans, this will be too tame for you. For those of you looking for something a little more wild that a typica urban fantasy or paranormal fantasy book, this would be just right. The heat is there, it's just not there all the time.

The Production of Hindu-Muslim Violence in Contemporary India (Jackson School Publications in International Studies), by Paul R. Brass

Chronic Hindu-Muslim rioting in India has created a situation in which communal violence is both so normal and so varied in its manifestations that it would seem to defy effective analysis. Paul R. Brass, one of the world's preeminent experts on South Asia, has tracked more than half a century's riots in the north Indian city of Aligarh. This book is the culmination of a lifetime's thinking about the dynamics of institutionalized intergroup violence in northern India, covering the last three decades of British rule as well as the entire post-Independence history of Aligarh.

Brass exposes the mechanisms by which endemic communal violence is deliberately provoked and sustained. He convincingly implicates the police, criminal elements, members of Aligarh's business community, and many of its leading political actors in the continuous effort to "produce" communal violence. Much like a theatrical production, specific roles are played, with phases for rehearsal, staging, and interpretation. In this way, riots become key historical markers in the struggle for political, economic, and social dominance of one community over another.

In the course of demonstrating how riots have been produced in Aligarh, Brass offers a compelling argument for abandoning or refining a number of widely held views about the supposed causes of communal violence, not just in India but throughout the rest of the world. An important addition to the literature on Indian and South Asian politics, this book is also an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the interplay of nationalism, ethnicity, religion, and collective violence, wherever it occurs.

Review

Paul R. Brass is the most distinguished political scientist working on Indian politics today..[This is] an outstanding work that marks a radical new departure in the study of riots in India and, probably, much more broadly.

(Ethnic and Racial Studies)

In this important book, Brass has collected a quite astounding amount of material on elections, caste politics, and the geography of riots and their morphology. The book contains a wealth of detailed observations about political parties, economic actors, and developments, as well as the geography of rioting, which makes it a landmark study of South Asian politics.

(Contemporary Sociology)

Brass is the leading South Asia political scientist in North America, and he brings to this work a maturity and a wealth of field experience unmatched by others.

Unbelivably Specific
By EsotericWaffles
Amazing, if dense, work describing the production of Hindu-Muslim violence. He shifts somewhat drastically from the rest of the foray in his field by changing the methodology of interpreting riots in India. This is to say that he views the causes of riots in India as a analytical quagmire and, instead, chooses to focus on how riots are produced rather than why. A very impressive work with an astounding amount of research. Congratulations.

Militant and Triumphant: William Henry O'Connell and the Catholic Church in Boston, 1859-1944, by James M. O'Toole

"Militant and Triumphant" aims to fill a major gap in the historical record of American Catholicism by presenting a portrait of Cardinal William Henry O'Connell and his significance in the Church and his times. Focusing on both the triumphs and controversies of O'Connell's career, James M. O'Toole chronicles the history of the catholic church in Boston in the first half of the 20th century. The biography begins with a discussion of O'Connell's Irish immigrant youth and education and his early positions as rector of the American College in Rome and bishop of Portland, Maine. O'Toole convincingly demonstrates that, as a bishop, O'Connell actively built his own public image while ambitiously campaigning for the position of archbishop of Boston. The most enduring success, O'Toole argues, of O'Connell's 37-year tenure as archbishop of Boston - despite a sexual and financial scandal surrounding his nephew, the archdiocesan chancellor - was his elaboration of "a personal style of leadership that was different from that of earlier bishops, changing the expectations for catholic bishops in America by thrusting on them the role of public figures they have generally sought to play since". Throughout, the book examines O'Connell's cultural and symbolic leadership of New England's Catholic population, and describes O'Connell's role in defining American catholicism as both "militant and triumphant": asserting its cultural vision beyond narrow denominational boundaries into broad areas of public morality, and confident of its eventual triumph over secular standards.

Power and Its Limits at the Apex of the American Roman Catholic Church, Depicted in a Biography of a Gay, Corrupt Prelate
By Gerald Parker
"Militant and Triumphant: William Henry O`Connell and the Catholic Church in Boston, 1859-1944" (University of Notre-Dame Press, 1992), by James O`Toole (a professor at my undergraduate alma mater, the University of Massachusetts at Boston) is a no-holds-barred biography of this figure. William O`Connell happens to be the prelate loosely depicted in the novel, and in the film based thereon, both titled "The Cardinal", although the novel and the film, unlike O`Toole`s scholarly biograhy, only hint at the depravity that lurked below the surface, away from public view, of Cardinal Abp. William Henry O`Connell`s life. O`Toole`s own book reveals O`Connell`s many faults, but it does not pillory him.

This biography renders a fair account of O`Connell`s life and career and of the religious milieu of O`Connell`s time, when Roman Catholic faith and worship flourished, as yet unsabotaged by the grinding vulgarity, liturgical downgrade, superficiality, the outright unbelief that have set in so widely after 1965, and lastly and perhaps worst of all (reflecting so much of the rest of these problems), the dreadful "Novus Ordo" liturgies which came into use at the dawn of the 1970s, as well as all too much of the other sheer rot and decline that so have come to bedevil and to mar the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. Let`s face it, regarding O`Connell himself, without O`Toole exaggerating anything, one comes to understand the personal shallowness and failings of this priestly-turned-prelatical careerist and opportunist quite well enough simply by reading what O`Toole reveals about O`Connell, such as concerning:

-- pilfering of church funds,

-- self-indulgence, love of luxury, and frequent absenteeism to travel abroad (the lastmost expensive hobby giving rise to his nickname of "Gangplank Bill!),

-- nepotism,

-- tolerance of secret clergy marriages (including that of his own nephew, Mgr. James O`Connell),

-- arrogance and bombast (which recall, among vintage comix characters of yesteryear, the risible "Major Hoople" a lot more than the likes of the heroically powerful and wealthy yet virtuous "Daddy Warbucks" of "Little Orphen Annie"),

-- secretiveness and hypocrisy; an example of this is O`Connell`s own "closeted" homosexuality (though O`Toole approaches this more gingerly, expressing more reservations about it than have some others, whose accusations point to O`Connell as the source of the systematic practice and clerical tolerance of the beastly pederasty and ephebophilia of the Boston Archdiocese`s priests that have resulted in the outbreak of terrible scandals during the episcopates of his successors over the decades subsequent to O`Connell`s death),

-- selfishness,

-- bullying,

-- real cowardice (despite all of his bluster, posing, and tormenting of the vulnerable), making him likely to back off cravenly from many strong confrontations (despite his public relations image of steadfastness and courage),

-- general worldliness and indifference to spiritual matters such as liturgy, praying the Breviary, and other matters of truly religious importance beyond the Church`s most materialistically and blatantly institutional concerns.

-- and there is too much more to continue to enumerate here!

The book is exceedingly well researched, with copious use of primary manuscript sources as well as of all kinds of printed literature in book and serial form, as anyone who follows up the many back-references will discover for himself.

Only a fuller treatment of O`Connell`s worthy efforts at music is lacking, which O`Toole mentions here and there but without covering so well as O`Connell`s musical contribution merits (to account for perhaps with the assistance of an academic or other practising music professional). The man who became Cardinal of Boston, if he had followed another career path, could have become an accomplished professional pianist and composer, perhaps a singer, too. I once had the opportunity, early in my music library career, to catalogue a bit of Cardinal O`Connell`s fine Latin Church music in manuscript (though he is best remembered for his pious and once popular vernacular hymns), which partly is how I became interested in this ecclesiastical figure. Cardinal O`Connell became rather well known for his pre-Vatican II hymns, which were genuinely popular as productions of musical piety for those times.

The book makes for a good read and a first-rate contribution to the study of Roman Catholicism`s history and sociology, not only in the Archdiocese of Boston, but in North America more generally.

History Generates Organisational Problems: O'Connell
By Phillipwh
Good book, interesting for Catholics to read. O'Connell's naked ambition was apparent to local priests and bishops as he slithered to the top job he sought.
If what this book claims is correct, O'Connell was not fit to be a catholic priest!

I love the tongue in cheek "the closer you get to the centre of the apple, the more likely you are to meet the worm." Worms do well in Church insecurity which has been dragged bleeding into the modern age.

Pius IX excommunicated those left and and centre when he lost the Papal States, a loss which was in fact a liberation for Italy for the Church. (read: Prisoner of the Vatican.

It is in the context of this fear and suspicion that people like O'Connell can wriggle their way to the top. Still to this day, Bishops are appointed by a Rome (rather than by the local church) fearful of modernity, a Roman Bureaucracy which tries to undo Lumen Gentium guidance of Vatican II. It is in the environment of suspicion, where priests must appear to toe the line as O'Connell did, that the pedophiles have masquerading as priests while the decent toiler was sidelined. There is a good book on Cardinal Moran in Sydney. I would love some good heavy historical work to done on Cardinal Spellman!
