About the Author
ROBERT W. WEISBERG, PHD, is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Brain, Behavior, and Cognition Cluster at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A cognitive psychologist, Dr. Weisberg's area of interest is creative thinking, particularly the cognitive processes involved in the intentional production of novelty. He has published papers investigating cognitive mechanisms underlying problem solving, and has published papers and books examining the cognitive processes underlying creative thinking, including Creativity: Genius and Other Myths and Creativity: Beyond the Myth of Genius.

Fascinating and illuminating

This is a wonderful book presenting a thoroughly researched thesis aimed at demystifying creativity. Throughout the book, built on famous case-studies as evidence and rational arguments, the author systematically reviews the different hypotheses explaining common and world-class creativity. The author asserts that creativity, as its core, does not involve exceptional cognitive processes. Rather, it derives from the same type of ordinary thinking we use in everyday life, except that it is applied to specialized areas by individuals who have intimate knowledge and experience in their field, and whose work brings them at the edge (and some creative works are only recognized as such much later). The mental processes are nothing but ordinary. We are all capable of creativity, and there is no qualitative difference between our brains and those of famous creators - whether they are inventors, artists or scientists. In doing so, he reviews the different methodologies, strengths and weaknesses of the existing paradigms explaining creativity. His arguments are compelling, due to the strength of the reasoning, and the particularly insightful examinations of famous acts of creation (already reading the first chapter on the elucidation of the DNA structure and Picasso's Guernica is illuminating). The book is way more serious than all the other ones claiming 'magic' or lateral thinking techniques help develop creativity (for a similar but less scholarly take on creativity, see also 'How to fly a horse'). All in all, it is a very exciting read, delivering a compelling and motivating message. Read this very interesting and important book...

I am a board certified adult psychiatrist practicing in Hawaii for over the past ten years. In addition, I have walking with my lord Jesus Christ for over 14 years although baptized at a much earlier age. I feel that Pastor Ralph has written a book about anxiety that is exceptionally practical in its approach. If only a couple ideas work for you, your anxiety could be much improved. There is a lot of confusion and sometimes controversy in terms of reconciling our Christian walks and taking medication for emotional issues. Pastor Ralph writes exceptionally well on this hot topic in his usual self-disclosing, humble style. We are foreignors and outsiders until we go home to be with the Lord, so there should be anxious and worrisome moments along the way. And yet, we were promised life abundantly, so why not do everything possible to expel any overwhelming anxiety? This book can be part of that healing process for you.

This is an easy to read book with lots of practical tools, as the author discusses his very personal experience with anxiety and how he came to realize that it was ok to use medication as a tool while in the midst of this (or any other) illness. It's an honest account of a difficult struggle and I appreciate the transparent spirit and courage he shows by choosing to share this with others so we all may benefit from it. Many chapters are healthy practices even if you are not dealing with anxiety, like "Driving in the Slow Lane", "Multi-tasking Makes Us Crazy" and "Protect Your Sleep". I like that a Pastor is telling us to slow down to gain insight and clarity when so many of us struggle with juggling ever increasing demands for our time. I really got a lot out of this book.

Defeating Anxiety is one of the best books I have read regarding the recognition and treatment of anxiety disorders, particularly among Christians. Pastor Ralph makes no bones about getting sufficient treatment. Thank you for not only an excellent read, but also a very informative, freeing resource for those who suffer (mostly in silence) for their frightening disorders.

About the Author

Ernest T. Stringer is author of numerous influential books on action research, including Action Research in Education (2008), Action Research in Health (with Bill Genat, 2004), and Action Research in Human Services (with Rosalie Dwyer, 2005). After an early career as primary teacher and school principal, Stringer served as lecturer in education at Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia. From the mid-eighties, based at Curtin’s Centre for Aboriginal Studies, he worked collaboratively with Aboriginal staff and community people to develop a wide variety of innovative and highly successful education and community development programs and services. As visiting professor at the University of New Mexico and Texas A&M, he has taught research methods courses and engaged in projects with African American and Latino community and neighborhood groups. As a UNICEF consultant, he recently engaged in a major project to increase parent participation in the schools in East Timor. Stringer has served (until prior to publication of this book) as a member of the editorial board of the Action Research Journal and is past president of the Action Learning and Action Research Association (ALARA).

Lois McFadyen Christensen, PhD is an associate professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is an elementary social studies specialist at the undergraduate and graduate levels teaching undergraduate, masters, and doctoral level course work. For six years, she facilitated a collaborative, cross-disciplined approach on the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Christensen’s publications and presentations are often in conjunction with inservice teachers and pertain to social studies research, critical pedagogy, and the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education.

Shelia C. Baldwin’s education career spans 27 years, with seventeen years in public school and ten in higher education. As a high school teacher of English, Reading and ESL, she taught diverse students who were often struggling and disengaged, which inspired her to eventually pursue her Ph.D. Her early work in action research with high school students to study the cultural diversity in their environment was transformational in her perception of classroom life. Her interest, promoting collaboration between teachers and students in the exploration and implementation of alternative instructional approaches, has been a focal point in her continuing work and research as a teacher educator. She has examined her own classes to learn more about teacher candidates’ developing theories about teaching, students, and learning environments. She has developed and supervised service learning field experiences in urban settings for undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates in content literacy courses to provide them with autonomous experiences in diverse settings. Her integration of action research processes introduces the concept of teacher as researcher and guides them toward critical reflection on their experiences that contribute toward their developing theories. She has developed a Master’s level action research course for both initial certification candidates and practitioners.

Excellent book for teachers who want to do action research

This is an excellent book that presents teachers how to translate planning and teaching to action research. Excellent diagrams, use of language, very well written, and inspiring. I would also recommend it for researchers who want to engage teachers in doing research.

About the Author
Dr. David T. Allen is the Gertz Regents Professor of Chemical Engineering, and the director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Resources, at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of multiple books and hundreds of scientific papers in areas ranging from coal liquefaction and heavy oil chemistry to the chemistry of urban atmospheres. The quality of his work has been recognized by research awards from the National Science Foundation, the AT&T Foundation, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, and the State of Texas. The findings from his research have been used to guide air quality policy development, and he has served on the U.S. EPA’s Science Advisory Board and the National Research Council’s Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology, addressing issues at the interface between science, engineering, and public policy. For the past two decades, his work has also focused on the development of materials for environmental education, including coauthoring the textbook Green Engineering: Environmentally Conscious Design of Chemical Processes. He has won teaching awards at the University of Texas and UCLA. Dr. Allen received his B.S. in chemical engineering, with distinction, from Cornell University in 1979. His M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering were awarded by the California Institute of Technology in 1981 and 1983. He has held visiting faculty appointments at the California Institute of Technology, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Department of Energy.

Dr. David R. Shonnard is Robbins Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University and director of the Sustainable Futures Institute. He received a B.S. in chemical/metallurgical engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1983; an M.S. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Davis, in 1985; a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis, in 1991; postdoctoral training in bioengineering at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 1990 to 1993; and he was a visiting instructor at the University of California at Berkeley in 2003. His experiences in life-cycle assessment (LCA) methods and applications include a one-year sabbatical at the Eco-efficiency Analysis Group at BASF AG in Ludwigshafen, Germany. He has been on the faculty in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University since 1993. Dr. Shonnard has more than twenty years of academic experience in sustainability issues in the chemical industry and Green Engineering. He is coauthor of the textbook Green Engineering: Environmentally Conscious Design of Chemical Processes, published by Prentice Hall in 2002. His current research interests focus on investigations of new forest-based biorefinery processes for production of transportation fuels, such as cellulosic ethanol and pyrolysis-based biofuels, from woody biomass using recombinant DNA and other approaches. Another active research area is LCA of biofuels and other biorefinery products to determine greenhouse gas emissions and net energy balances. He has contributed to National Academy of Sciences publications on green chemistry/engineering/sustainability in the chemical industry. Dr. Shonnard has coauthored 70 peer-reviewed publications and received numerous honors and awards for teaching and research into environmental issues of the chemical industry, including the Ray W. Fahien Award from ASEE (2003). He is a recipient of the NSF/Lucent Technologies Foundation Industrial Ecology Research Fellowship (1998) for research that integrates environmental impact assessment with process design.

Basic Outside-The-Box Type Book

I got this for a college course in sustainable engineering. I like the author's examples. Life Cycle Assessments are hard to quantify because it's all about where you draw the boundary conditions. I think the author does a great job of not getting too carried away, but including the right amount of components.

Also, the book reads very easy, like a book should. Some engineering books read more like technical journal articles. This book starts from the absolute basics and works up from that.

Ali Wentworth is the author of the New York Times bestseller Ali in Wonderland. Her film credits include Jerry Maguire, The Real Blonde, Office Space, and It's Complicated. Vagina monologues of Ali Wentworth

Ali Wentworth is a gorgeous woman, great comedienne and an excellent writer. This memoir is written in an entertaining prose rather than a traditional biography. In this collection of essays, she writes about relationships, friendships, inspiration, marriage, parenting, and wellness. She muses on the hard lessons learned in her career as a television performer, a wife and a mother in her 50 years of life! After all life experiences comes in fifty shades of grey.

Some of the interesting stories in this book are; when she was living in Los Angeles with her friend named Daphne, she experiences jealousy with her friend. She finds that her circle of friends were encased in sexual ambiguity and insecurity in life. In another episode, when she was on an erotic adventure with her boyfriend named Leo to Hawaii, he takes a book to read during the trip and her dream of a romantic weekend comes to an abrupt end when he leaves her in the hotel. While shooting for video project in her swanky apartment in New York, when a cameraman named Hugh stinks up her apartment with a bowel blast in the restroom; she comes up with several schemes to circumvent that problem but to no avail.

This book is full of witty zingers and some juicy stories. With twist of words and phrases, she narrates her life story in a highly entertaining style and keeps the reader engaged to the very last page. Despite all the rowdiness, Ali Wentworth’s erudition pokes fun of life. She sounds psychotic, but she is also a lady who is proud of intimate disclosures sharing with her readers.

I like watching Ali Wentworth whenever she is on tv

I like watching Ali Wentworth whenever she is on tv. However, to my disappointment I found her book SO bloody boring! We are the same age, so I thought it would be a fun light read while on vacation. While she does have a cute sense of humor the stories were SO dull... and I felt like the Kendal Jenner story was contrived! I all honesty I couldn't finish the book... it wasn't even worth skimming! Sorry Alie... you are still adorable, but your book just isn't:(
