He believes he met God in the form of a man and it is He who revealed the BEST knowledge of how to eat to live. We make no attempt at reinterpreting, reinventing or improving upon what the Messenger received from God. The objective of this book is only to make the reader aware of the means and ways the food and their by-products have been adversely transformed from the initial published dates of these writings to date, and from this awareness and updated information contained herein, can stay consistent with the principles taught in these writings. We felt there was a great need for an essential companion; essential, because through processing and commercialization, food has taken on a different form from what we had grown accustomed to. Since the 60’s and 70’s, food that was once called “pure” is not pure. Various government agencies responsible for checking the safety of food have adopted various definitions for political and economic reasons, but at the expense of health. Consequently, the word pure simply means that there are “acceptable” levels of toxins, or acceptable levels of mercury, or acceptable levels of pesticides, herbicides or solvents per part, per million. There was a time when brown sugar was a lot healthier than sugar is today. What was once stated as brown sugar was simply “raw sugar.” It was a lot healthier and when Elijah Muhammad recommended it, he did not mean what today has come to be known as brown sugar, which is highly refined white sugar with molasses poured over it. For on one hand he would not advise us to NOT eat refined products while simultaneously telling us to eat the new form of brown sugar. As well, take for instance the aspect of pork. This so-called food is completely prohibited due to forbidding of God and the indestructible worm inside. It is never to be taken for food, so much so, Elijah Muhammad advises that we should die first before we eat it. In today’s market, there are hundreds of thousands of products that are made from pork and its by-products. Since the 60’s, these products are not so well pointed out. These are just a few of the reasons this book is essential and will serve as an excellent companion to How To Eat To Live, Books 1 & 2. There are two main veins this book will pursue: one is the processes of food and the surrounding equipment associated and secondly, the commercialization of it for maximum profits and the expense of the people’s health in general. Of course, secondary to this is the fact that bad food equals bad health, which equals a great economic boom in medicine, doctors and hospitalization. About the Author
Born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California, John Steinbeck dropped out of college and worked as a manual laborer before achieving success as a writer. His 1939 novel, The Grapes of Wrath, about the migration of a family from the Oklahoma Dust Bowl to California, won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. Steinbeck served as a war correspondent during World War II, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. He died in New York City in 1968.

or run these people off public lands because of their own fears that these arriving immigrants could only extend bad conditions

Enticing from beginning to end. The trials and tribulations of these people and, how they suffered in order to feed their families while living in squalor, under inhumane conditions, being deliberately driven into continually worsening situations in an attempt to make them give up their own homes. It was eye-opening to see the fear of those people already living out west and how they used to humiliate, beat, kill, or run these people off public lands because of their own fears that these arriving immigrants could only extend bad conditions on them on 'their' own lands. Those in California were starting to believe the propaganda that these Oakie's were bad people looking to do harm, steal food, trespass and take jobs at their next destinations. Truth is they were not greedy, or out to harm anyone else, all they wanted was a fair chance to raise their families in peace and, without the pains of starvation, in lands with ample fruit and, meat that in many cases went to waste due shear meanness by the owner of these products. Their tenacity was incredible as they continued to move on in an attempt to save the themselves, their familes and, friend's from starvation, illness, and, homelessness by moving them all to these strange lands in the west with the empty promise of unlimited work for all; this belief died as quickly as it came about for those that started their long trek's to these new promised lands as they would discover along the way. This alone would have been enough to stop most families in their tracks but, not the Joad's............they continued to race toward a dream that was truly a nightmare even after being warned several times that there would not be any work there. These people were tricked and/or forced into giving up their lives by 'them', & 'they', never knowing who 'them' and 'they' really were. Were 'they' the land owners, the banks, the government.....................it seems that the leaders of this farming movement were very successful by keeping them living in ignorance as these scoundrels stole their lives out from under them...............they were helpless until the point of anger. There stories are much more coarse than those of today but...............there are still the 'they's' and 'them's' out there today that control our everyday lives...........we're not really sure who they are but we follow them..........their modern handbills are the media who continue to lead us astray many times. I found this story of history to be intriguing and even more so I was surprised how closely it still resembles the society we live in today in so many ways. Great book.

Of Mice and Men is beautiful in its simplicity and concision while painting vivid scenes and directly touching on human thought and emotion. George and Lennie, the protagonists, evolve and depend on each other as they navigate through the lonely world. George acts as a father figure to Lennie, who retains a childish innocence while possessing incredible strength. Recognizing the danger of the two characteristics combined, George seeks to protect Lennie, and does so by not only saving him from the dangers of real life, but also defending him against the darkness of hopelessness. However, in the end, George realizes that he cannot forever protect Lennie, as he can only do so much to shield Lennie from reality.

I know that I am sure to be limited in my understanding of this book, but from what I understand, I love it. I especially love how the characters are so well developed - even Curley's wife, who, does not have a name not because Steinbeck disregarded her, but because she is a femme fatale figure who, despite being a 'tart' woman and therefore being supposedly inferior in status to men, is able to have such a great impact on the whole of the story. And it's so interesting that the man who falls into her femme fatale trap isn't ensnared by her beauty or sexuality, but simply because of his childish obsession with touching soft things.

So as a high school student who was “forced” to read this (it was on the summer reading list), I highly recommend this book.

The book is a classic that still reverberates in the America of 2015. Although most Americans do not want to admit it, the themes of the book are still relevant today. The excesses of greed and capitalism continue to plague our nation, and perhaps by reading the Grapes of Wrath modern Americans will be moved to confront some of the problems inherent in our economic and political systems.

The novel is pure Steinbeck - stark, clear, and unflinching. Although some today may have difficulty persevering through a long novel, the book represents what is great in American literature. It is impossible to conceive of a reader who is not moved by this extraordinary story. A must read.

A lot of stories for your money.

I am a fan of end of the world novels. And a fan of short stories. Now, it is hard for anyone, regardless of how good an author they may be, to write a gripping story in a dozen pages or so, so take this as you may. The collection was okay. Not great, not mind-shattering, but, also, it wasn't bad. I've read far worse. It was entertaining, heartbreaking, and, at times, triumphant. I think some of the big-name authors, (like Hugh Howey and David Brin), were thrown in there just for star-quality. Some of my favorite stories were Jimmy's Roadside Cafe, by Ramsey Shehadeh, about a fellow who set up the last friendly cafe in the world along side a highway full of dead cars, dispensing as much food as comfort to the straggling survivors who came his way. When We Went to See the End of the World, by Robert Silvergerg was the most fun story I've read in a long while. I loved the style - such a throwback to the 70's. And Final Exam, by Megan Arkenberg, which was done in such an unusual and unexpected format, you couldn't help but laugh. The drawback there is that that story doesn't work as good in the Kindle version as it would in a real paper book. For that reason alone, I would urge you to get the dead-tree edition of this book, if you are planning to buy. Be warned though: the stories get weirder and weirder the further into the book you go, till, nearly at the end, you get such fantastical fantasy you might as well just go pick up a H.P. Lovecraft novel instead.

About the Author
Harris is professor emeritus of New Testament exegesis and theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. Formerly, he was warden of Tyndale House at Cambridge University in England. His Ph.D. is from the University of Manchester, where he studied under F. F. Bruce.

The Most Reliable Study of 2 Corinthians Available Today!

Murray Harris has already proven himself to be a capable interpreter of this book with his EBC contribution back in 1976. But this book is a much more extensive and helpful study. He has a tremendous command of the Greek Text, and he defends the unitary character of the letter. Others have suggested that this was a hard to read commentary. Indeed, it is an academic work, steeped toward the pastor-scholar.

But it yields rich rewards for those who are willing to work their way through it. If you are preaching through 2 Corinthians and you need an exegetical commentary, this is the one to get. Also, buy David Garland's contribution for a more homiletically friendly approach.

Solid, but not remarkable

Murray Harris is a solid exegete and is known for his grammatical acumen. This commentary, however, does not read like the rest of the NIGTC series (with the possible exception of Luke by IH Marshall). The NIGTC series is intentionally written toward a higher level audience, those that still know their Greek and can wade through French and German at least a little.

The work as a whole is solid, if unspectacular. Harris holds to many traditional points, and rarely comes up with new arguments for them. That being said, the best feature of this commentary by far is the introduction. He argues quite well for 2 Corinthians' unity and covers the theology of 2 Corinthians as only Victor Paul Furnish had ever done previously (with the exception of the NTT series by Cambridge).

The previous reviewer of this book said that there is a mistake moving from page 67-68 in the book, yet there is not. Page 68 begins with a list of specific grammatical or rhetorical devices used by Paul in the letter. One such device is "citation of a view, with a verb of saying expressed" (p. 68). This just happens to be the first phrase on the page, and so the previous reviewer thought it was the middle of a thought when it was actually a beginning of a list of terms, none of which are in upper case.

Occasionally this commentary read more like one from the Word series (which begins the comments with the Greek text) or the BECNT series (which muddles everything together, grammar and theology, in the comments section). Harris mixes in theology with grammar, and thus allows the reader to think that theology and grammar are determined at the same time when grammar should come first and theology second.

I definitely would recommend Thrall (ICC) and Furnish (AB) first, but Harris' volume is still solid. The bibliography is extensive and clearly Harris put a lot of work into this commentary.

It finally makes sense

After trying to figure out why the disenchantment with work as I hit 40, this book has explained it! Although some of the data used is out of date, the findings are still very valid.
I recommend it to those trying to figure out how to navigate through life.

Very insightful - still relevant today

At first I thought this book might not be relevant to me, some 20 years after it was written in a different country. Whilst some of the stereotypical behaviours and social "norms" are different, it is easy to see the translation of the insights to today and in a different country. And while the USA of the 70s is gone this book provided me with a better understanding of some of the (largely unconscious) behaviour of friends, parents and siblings, behaviours which I had not identified or simply taken for granted are now a little easier to fathom. As I read about each life stage I could identify it with those I know and this enabled me to forgive, empathise with and accept a lot which had previously left me hurt and baffled.
Although fairly young (35) I can already see some of the patterns at play which Gail describes. I don't care if it's not original work or if the lifetstyles are different and the social pressures altered, this book is still very applicable to those who can objectively view themselves and those around them.
This book looks at middle and upper middle class university graduates (called "college" graduates in the US) with primarily professional vocations in accounting, law, medicine etc (stangely little mention of engineers!). Also, I suspect the people are largely private school educated. Whilst people in other circustances might be under different pressures, I have seen similar crises and cycles in a wide range of people. A perceptive reader would learn from this book, nomatter their circumstances.

I liked the book because it introduces many fascinating places with original design solutions around the world along with great text descriptions. I guess what would make this book perfect is adding more images of particular places especially those which sometimes took only 2 pages to describe the whole area visually.
