About the Author
William Leonard Pickard is a graduate of the Kennedy School of Goverment at Harvard, with degrees in chemistry and public policy. He was formerly a research associate in neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, a Fellow of the Interfaculty Initiative on Drugs and Addictions at Harvard, and Deputy Director of the Drug Policy Analysis Program at UCLA. His interests include Victorian literature, deincarceration technologies, the neuropolicy of cognitive enhancement, and the future of novel drugs. He encourages correspondence from the thoughtful reader.

Review of William Leonard Pickard’s ‘The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets and Sacraments’

Upon reading and re-reading ‘The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets and Sacraments’, I feel compelled to offer a sufficient review of this magical mountain of 21st Century writing. The publishing of this work signifies perhaps the first psychedelic literature which, years from now, will be referred to as “classic.”
It’s no secret that for the past few decades the world has been mired in a sort of widespread creative funk with little to no truly original offerings emanating forth from anywhere. All this has changed with the release of William Leonard Pickard’s ‘The Rose’. Signaling a new phase in the ever-evolving mandala of the world of books, a new planet of sorts has been created, one which will grow by accretion with each updated version.
The reader is really an explorer in a strange new realm, as it unfolds and expands to a beautiful and tragic immensity. Pursued by something vaguely sinister on the periphery, our narrator crosses landscapes which become mythic in the unfolding psychedelic origami, as he vividly captures fragile humanity with his whole-earth perspective.
TROP is a joy to read. Mystical & lovely, magical and curiously medieval, ‘The Rose of Paracelsus’ takes the reader on a journey to the fascinating realms of “The Six,” an elite international group of six chemists who are devoted to actively driving cognitive evolution of the human species by synthesizing and distributing “planetary-scale batches” of psychedelics. Along with our humble narrator, we travel heady realms of cognitive enhancement less traveled by ordinary humans as TROP exudes a powerful unrelenting emotional impact.
I’m amazed by the versatility of TROP, it’s unwillingness to be easily defined. This book touches on so many different themes and genres. It’s a thrilling adventure, drug journal of espionage, extraordinary epic, Shakespearean tragedy, it even gets science-fiction-ish and downright spooky at some points and more.
This 656-page blueprint for a better human and grand-scale examination of the human condition written with an unrestrained elegance, combined with the originality of the concept, is evidence that there is really no comparable contemporary equivalent to this text. It can only be described as a gift to history and humanity.
Realizing the full importance of this monumental work, both in terms of literary and historical value, will take the world several decades to acknowledge. As readers in the immediate do start unlocking for themselves the significant potential of this work in their minds, look out, cause ohhh-baby!
So, if you are a fan of masterful pacing, transportive detail and hearing of those who live in the realms of the ethereal, then ‘The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets and Sacraments’ is for you.
