Mike Breen's best book yet

Mike Breen is probably best known for his outstanding book on discipleship, "Building a Discipling Culture" and the practical how-to book on MC's "Launching Missional Communities." While not to denigrate the others, this is Breen's best book to date. It's not terribly long, but it definitely packs a punch. And of the previous books he has written, this is definitely the most personal and has the most stories from his own life and ministry.

The flow of the book is basically divided into two sections:
1) Why we have such a problem with leadership in the church
2) How we can multiply missional leaders

It's one of the most Biblically sound books you will find on the topic of Christian leadership, starts with the Bible, theology and theory, but quickly moves to nuts-and-bolts in each chapter of what it will actually look like in a real place with real leaders we are trying to develop and release.

It's a fun, engaging read and definitely one you'll return to time and time again.

I am living fruit these principles are life changing!

I am living fruit that the principles in this book are life changing. It is extremely rare to find someone who is a theologian, a strategist, and a practitioner, all wrapped up in one. Without exaggeration, this is Mike Breen. I am the senior leader of a church that from most counts would be considered successful and effective. And yet as Mike Breen himself, his ministry team of 3DM (weare3dm.com), and the leadership principles from this book have all poured into me, I have been changed.

I will leave it to other helpful reviews to summarize the concepts. Here is how the principles in his foundational book "Building a Discipleship Culture" and now this book "Multiplying Missional Leaders" have changed me forever. Until genuinely understanding these leadership principles, the following was true of me:

* I didn't realize my operating system of ministry was church and not discipleship.
* I didn't realize how dependent I was on leading from the platform versus leading from my life.
* I didn't realize that discipling people in ministry skill was just as important as discipling them in character.
* I didn't realize that I can help everyone find their base gift from the five spiritual gifts listed in Ephesians 4:11 that can empower so many people.
* I didn't realize that everything I did needed to be simple enough to be reproducible for others.
* I didn't realize what low control/high accountability meant throughout every phase of the ministry.
* I didn't realize I never had a city-wide vision but only a vision and competitive spirit for "my ministry/church"
* I didn't realize I was not developing a ministry to retain one singular vision over the long haul that could eventually be a part of a wider movement.

These are just some of the ways God has used the principles in this book to change the trajectory of my leadership influence.

I cannot recommend this book and the integrity of this author more highly. It is a foundational must!

Excellent Field Guide to Developing Missional Leaders

I've been on this so called missional journey for several years. I am indebted to many of the missional thinkers such as Hirsch, Frost, Guder, Cole, Halter, Smay, etc. I am also indebted to E. Stanley Jones, Newbigen, and other missionary theologians and thinkers. As one burnt out on doing "church" and "evangelism", each of these leaders helped me see another way existed. They painted the picture of a place I longed to discover. Eventually I found this place called incarnational/missional and I was excited to show others what I discovered. Unfortunately when I came back to lead others to this promised land it was as if I had begun speaking a language no one could understand. Tower of Babel was happening all over again!

But then I met Mike Breen. Mike Breen is a gifted teacher who has the ability to take great theory and turn it into practical "how to's." This comes from several decades of practicing what he is now teaching. My first encounter with him was through his book Building a Discipling Culture. After being introduced to this book and joining one of the discipleship coaching huddles, I was able to lead them in to a missional (discipling) lifestyle. I can know say I have led a community of people into the amazing land called incarnational/missional. The next challenge was to begin multiplying those with me. We are now in the phase of attempting to multiply Missional Communities and that takes Missional Leaders. Fortunately I did not have to wonder through the desert as long this time. Multiplying Missional Leaders (MML) is a fantastic field guide to begin this process of multiplication.

So what's so good about it?

1. First and foremost is that Breen did not neglect the Bible in instructing leaders on how train up new leaders. In fact, he leads with the biblical premise everytime.

2. In a world that focuses so much attention on Competency Breen first draws our attention to Character and then Competency. Leaders must be honest with themselves. Are we being faithful? And are we being fruitful? The Character and Competency matrix is a great tool. Breen's look at appetite, approval, and ambition calls leaders to examine themselves.

3. Church splits and break-ups are a common theme. After reading Breen's take on the 5-fold gifts in Ephesians 4, it is easy to see why divisions begin. However, Breen helps leaders learn to value and desire the different personalities and gifts. Helping the people in my community understand how God has gifted them to lead helps them to not only lead more naturally and confidently, but also helps them pray and seek for persons with other gifting's to help.

4. The leadership pipeline gives leaders a good path and guide to follow. It is simple and easy to follow. The four C's helped me see some of the areas of need and opportunity in some of my leaders and gave us a language and guide for discussion and improvement. The readiness and availability tools are also already in use.

5. The 5 capitals is another great example of how to continue to challenge the leader to grow. Often times we get satisfied and prideful with one or two, but in order to build the Kingdom we need all 5 capitals in ourselves and in those we are discipling and training.

6. Language creates culture, but how do we find the right language (vocab) to create the right culture? Breen instructs us that your vocab will be defined by your vision, values, vehicles, and valuation. He does not only explain to us the learners that this is the case, but he shows us how this is done biblically. After reading MML, I came away with a biblical and confident view of each.

7. As was the case with Building a Discipling Culture (a must read as well), Breen helps the visual learner like myself by using plenty of shapes, matrixes, and pictures.

This may be a book but you will find yourself using it like a field guide. Go ahead a clear a space off on your desk because this book will not make it to your shelf. It will be a permanent fixture and go to on your desk.

Intelligent and Accessible Overview

Tarek Osman is an Egyptian economist, journalist and historian of the modern middle east focused on contemporary issues and problems in that region. He has written a thoughtful and penetrating analysis of the rapid rise and decline of Political Islam/Islamism in the wake of the Arab Uprisings. He writes retrospectively ("How did we get here?") prospectively ("where might we be going?") and prescriptively ("where *should* we try to go from here?"), all against the backdrop of the political and intellectual history of the past century in the middle east. This is a lot to take on, and though his ambitions sometimes outstrip his answers, it is remarkable that he writes with such insight about these widely ranging topics. Additionally, he writes in a clear and accessible way even when he takes up aspects of intellectual history and politics that are usually discussed in academic contexts that can be forbidding to the interested lay-person. The book can be read profitably by those without any special background and serves as a fine overview.

Osman thinks that in order to understand the (mostly) unfortunate current events in the region, one must first come to terms with historical, socio-political, economic and ideological forces that have shaped not just the events of the 21st century, but also the ideas and beliefs that have become predominant in the discourse of citizens, politicians, clerics and media pundits. He seeks to understand the main causes of today's hostile conflicts over the meaning and role of such fundamental categories as the state, political participation, civil society, religion, the Ulama (community of clerics), Sharia, secularism, tolerance, and economic and social justice. He breaks the history of the modern middle east down into 3 general paradigms, each of which prevailed during a particular era over roughly the past century. In chronological order these are the ages of Liberalism, Nationalism and Islamism respectively. Of course these categories are not entirely mutually exclusive, but they are useful models to understand the predominant trends in politics and culture.

The first, the Liberal age, was characterized by increased Westernization and secularism, both cultural and political. Examples might include Kemal Attaturk's reforms in the 20's and 30s stressing popular sovereignty and secular politics and education. Another example might be the Egyptian Constitution of 1923 which adopted a parliamentary representative system, drafted by the liberal Wafd Party. The era of Western style liberal reform movements waned after the establishment of Israel in 1948, or rather after the Arab states lost the war they fought to dissolve Israel. As Arabs saw things, the Western powers supported the rights of Jewish immigrants to determine their own fate in a sovereign nation-state which displaces Arabs, yet continued to administer exploitative colonies and "mandates" in the Islamic world. Thus it seemed that the European rhetoric of equality, freedom and self-determination was empty. So went the reasoning of many disillusioned liberal Arabs. Conclusion: European models of Liberalism are not the answer. (In recent times the Liberal tradition has been reevaluated by many pro-democracy movements and secularists in the region who advocate a less Eurocentric appropriation of Liberalism.)

Thinkers and politicians then turned to Arab Nationalism, as exemplified by Nasser and later such entities as the Baath party. Political self- determination and a decisive break from the late colonial mindset were at the heart of Nationalism which was usually secular in tone. The basis of solidarity and identity in this age was "Arabness" which was to serve as an inspiration to modernize states like Egypt, Syria and Iraq while diminishing poverty and oppression. In this paradigm, all religions in the Arab world are (in theory) tolerated and none form the nucleus of collective identity. Muslims, Maronites, Jews, Druze, Copts, Shii and Sunni-- these distinctions should not be barriers to one's inclusion and participation in Arab states and society. Nasser's successful nationalization of the Suez Canal in defiance of France and Britain was seen as the high point of the Nationalist age. But despite the rhetoric, poverty was not diminished, and Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood were jailed and tortured leading to a more radical and politicized brand of Islamism. After Israel swiftly defeated Egypt, Jordan and Syria in 1967, annexing much of their territories, the Nationalist outlook lost much of its motivational sweep. Nationalist regimes tended towards dictatorships which were unresponsive to economic and social ills affecting large swathes of their populations. After 1967 it was clear that these regimes were not nearly as strong or independent as they claimed to be . They tended increasingly to become client states of great Western powers or the Soviet Union, and nationalistic pretensions were belied. Since the 70s Islamism and secularism have both grown steadily, but Islamism has grown dramatically through organizations that are increasingly well funded, and popular.

Osman maintains that the middle east is currently in the age of Islamism, which by the time of the Arab Uprisings in 2011 had reached something of a peak. By 2011, groups like the MB and Hezbollah had been embraced by many citizens who rely upon them for social services including healthcare, education, job opportunities and professional networking. Such organizations function pragmatically, and increasingly are in step with the high-tech digital age, recruiting members with a broad range of professional, technological and entrepreneurial skills. They have a great influence on media outlets and are able to get Islamist messages across on satellite TV and of course the internet. Osman explains the sociological and economic factors that led to the growth and efficiency of Islamist organizations and political parties. He then discusses the ideological and political factors that have led to their rapid decline in post "Arab Spring" countries where they recently had a firm hold on legitimate power(Mosri and the MB in Egypt and the Ennahda Party in Tunisia) but lost all of it (Egypt) or much of it (Tunisia) in the face of widespread popular resistance. Why were they rejected by large segments across the middle east and North Africa?

From the standpoint of the relatively small but influential secularists and progressives that, in large measure, kicked off the uprisings (students, intellectuals, journalists, elites), Islamists hijacked the Uprisings which were supposed to lead to greater rights and economic opportunity. They see the Islamists as even more oppressive than the military based dictatorships they replaced, and they are deeply skeptical when Islamist politicians claim to promote democracy, tolerance and equality. They point to, for example, Morsi's telling move to bypass the judiciary and grant extraordinary powers to himself using the excuse of a transitional period of crisis. Appointees in Egypt and Tunisia were largely drawn from their own Islamist parties and networks, and Sharia was sometimes touted by both of those parties. All of this belied the representative, democratic veneer of the allegedly moderate Islamists who claimed to be committed to coalition politics in which many voices including those of the liberals would be registered. Aggravating things, there have been economic downturns and not the promised growth and increased opportunities after 2011. Currently, according to Osman, the standoff between secularists and Islamists defines the situation. So does Islamism have a future? If so, is it compatible with liberal secularism?

Osman does not pretend to know the answer, but he discusses earlier "Islamists" (usually they are called Islamic Modernists) who did see just such a possibility. Such leading thinkers of the late 19th and early 20th century as Al-Afghani and Muhammad Abduuh (a prestigious cleric) thought that Islamic civilization had become stagnant, that true reform requires creative and flexible reasoning aimed at making Islam workable in the Modern world. This was a scholarly bunch, and they often pointed out that the Golden Age of Islam was made possible by the reconciliation of reason and faith among philosophers and scholars of jurisprudence (fiqh) and divine law (Sharia) in ways that enabled them to address problems not mentioned or anticipated in scripture. For many reasons, the license to think originally in jurisprudence (ijtihad) was rejected as dangerous to "genuine" or "original Islam." The works of philosophers like Avicenna were deemed heretical, and some heresies were codified as capital offenses.The modernists thought that Islam needed to recover its genuinely Islamic but creative and adaptable thinking in politics, law and education. Osman ends the book by praising their efforts and saying that in the end much will depend on whether today's Islamists become as thoughtful as these modernists, or whether they will continue to fall in line with the more extreme and rigid brand of Islamism associated with anti-Western thinkers like Sayaad Qubt who has greatly influenced militant extremists. If the former there is hope for finding common ground for secularists, Islamists and other groups including those of minority religions. If not, the conflict will likely continue to escalate.

Osman also discusses the "Turkish model" in which the originally Islamist AKP (Erdogan's "Freedom and Development Party") showed itself capable of retaining its conservative principles while playing ball with other parties and interest groups. Many Turkish liberals and secularists might disagree with this sanguine interpretation, as they are uneasy with the AKP record. But it is true that Turkey, a European state and member of Nato, has been governed by a modified Islamist party and president in recent years. Though tensions related to this likely led to the loss of Turkey's previously held temporary seat at the UN Security Council in 2014, the AKP is distinct from such groups as the MB. Osman, like Tariq Ramadan and other authors, uses the "Turkish Model" to encourage a flexible approach to Islamism-- one that might allow tolerant and modern political institutions to take root in the Middle East. He clearly sympathizes with liberal secularists on many points, but sees them as a bit insulated from the general population; a privileged group with many fine ideals but an inability to reckon with the role that religion plays in the lives of many ordinary people in their own countries. The idea of emulating the "Turkish Model" is intriguing, but it presupposes the stability of democratic or parliamentary institutions which is not a given. As I write this review, Erdogan is trying to put limits on freedom of assembly, speech and the independence of the judiciary, in the name of security, all of which is causing alarm among many outside observers and citizens in Turkey who fear a slippery slope leading to more extreme Islamism.

As far as revisiting the Islamic Modernist thinkers and reformers of the 19th century, I am not sure that it would amount to much more than an interesting diversion. I suspect that nuanced and abstruse thinkers and reformers of Islam will not play a prominent role in the unfolding, crisis-ridden situation. Multiple emergencies would seem to overshadow any interest in scholarly Islamic philosophy and deep discussions of fiqh (jurisprudence). Pragmatism is the order of the day in an age of eroding nation-states (e.g. Syria, Iraq, Libya), refugee and humanitarian crises of the greatest magnitude, the growth of large and well funded militant groups like ISIS who settle and control oil-rich provinces, deepening sectarian wars and widespread lack of access to education, healthcare, stable job opportunities, and security of life and limb for so many Arabs. The stakes are high and the window of opportunity to attenuate these problems is limited.

Overall, Osman astutely synthesizes history, journalism, economics and intellectual history making many important and illuminating connections along the way. His historical analysis is stronger than his prognosis, in my view. Still, it is hard to fault him if, like most others writing on these vexing topics, some of his answers and suggestions are vague and perhaps unrealistic. The book has more than adequate merit to compensate for that common shortcoming. I strongly recommend it both as an historical overview and a thinking person's guide to current events in the region.

It is Meredith's way of keeping the connection to her best friend alive, because without Anjali, who is she? Through the course of her grief, Meredith begins to learn things about herself and her friend that put their relationship in a new light. Taking on a tough and little-explored subject, Haber skillfully handles the child's heartache, her loneliness, and the conflicting desires of wanting to continue on with her life but not wanting to forget Anjali. By placing the story between the keys of Meredith's dad's old typewriter, the author gives the narrative a believable realism (complete with a 12-year-old's typos). The format allows an intimate look at the inner workings of the girl's grief and the self-deprecating view she has on her friendship with Anjali. With such an interesting protagonist, it is slightly disappointing that it is Noah Spivak, Meredith's crush, who becomes the catalyst for change and not Meredith herself. Meredith’s insecurity about the prettier Anjali slowly rises to the surface as she works through feelings of grief, anger, and isolation. Noah (the object of both girls’ affections) joins Meredith in grieving, and when their friendship starts to move to another level, Meredith wonders if Anjali would be happy or jealous. Is Meredith betraying her friend, or has that already happened? Haber’s epistolary novel is aimed at middle-schoolers who can appreciate the drama and angst (shown with bold caps and exclamation points) of a preteen girl. Frequently typed on her dad’s old typewriter and full of spelling errors (which may be a distraction for some), this story is fairly successful in portraying loss and betrayal, in spite of sometimes wooden, two-dimensional characters and a nebulous view of the afterlife. For your book group!

Parent-child book groups need books that speak to both age groups, are fun to read, and laced with serious human themes worth discussing. Dear Anjali supplies this all.

Don't be concerned that the story is launched by the death of the speaker's best friend. This event is handled gently and balanced with insight and humor; it is completely appropriate for teen or pre-teen readers. Moreover, although dealing with the death of a friend is (fortunately) something that few teens experience, the event provides the framework for a story full of themes that every teen (and adult) will understand and relate to. One of the key themes of the book is following the trajectory of first seeing a friend with pure and unrealistic admiration, to recognizing imperfections and duplicity, and back to a realistic and mature appreciation of the shared ground. What teen, or former teen, can't relate to that? Kids who connect well to books and writing but are less confident about their social connectedness will particularly see themselves here, and rejoice.

Thoughtful and engaging

Don't worry, boys: the pinkness of this cover is meant to be ironic. As long as you can handle a very first-person (complete with typewriter glitches and spelling oddities) girl voice, you'll be just as happy with this book as any of your female counterparts would be.

"Dear Anjali" was a great read. It can't be easy to treat a serious subject like a friend's unexpected passing, while neither becoming glum nor seeming irreverent. The book pulls it off by skimming over the details of Anjali's death and focusing on best friend Meredith's efforts to cope. But it's also a healthy middle-school romance -- so there is a lot going on, and the characters are both likable and real enough that I always wanted to hear more from them.

Funny and Thought Provoking

I read this book because I have read and enjoyed the other books by this author. Each of her books has been very unique. This novel surprised me, because I often found myself laughing out loud as I read, even though the book dealt with serious topics, such as death. It was very thought provoking, and made me think about life and friendships. I would highly recommend it.

a thoroughly modern beginner book

“Murach's Java Servlets and JSPs” third edition looks and reads like a Murach book. This is good. It's always nice when a book delivers what you are expecting. If you haven't read a Murach book before, it is a book meant for beginners. On each set of pages, the left side is text and the right is code/diagrams/references. Each chapter ends with very detailed exercises.

The book begins with the basics but doesn't limit itself to raw servlets and JSP. Chapter 1 explains how Spring and JSF fit into the picture. The book even covers JSF (but not Spring.) I wasn't expecting either to even be mentioned, so this is a nice bonus.

The book tries to cover real world concepts. There was a good bit about security including XSS and SQL injection. I would have liked other security techniques to be alluded to like CSRF. That might be too much to expect in a beginner book though. I haven't seen a beginner book cover XSS before either.

The book is up to date. It includes Java 8, HTML 5, CSS and even MVC. Any self respecting Servlet/JSP book should cover MVC of course. There were good disclaimers of when you should/shouldn't do something. Like that you shouldn't use scriptlets.

There was only one piece of advice I disagreed with in the book – using the Tomcat lib directory. I asked the author about that during the CodeRanch book promotion and he explained that he doesn't endorse that practice and will word it more clearly in the next edition. I'm satisfied with that answer. I also wish he covered tag files. Tag files rock. Minor things that I miss.

Noticing a theme? I'm happy with the book. It covers more than I expected so it whet my appetite for more. It highly recommend this book as your first Java web development book.

The perfect text for beginners

As the first to review the third addition, I would advise viewing the reviews on the second addition. Although basic in nature, this book will help a beginning web application developer understand what it takes. The format of all Murach's books are amazing, and break topics up in the perfect way. The pages on the left explain a topic. On the right, there are either code examples and/or diagrams to demonstrate. That's it! It's the perfect layout. You will retain the MOST information in the least amount of time by reading any of Murach's books. Well worth keeping on the shelf for 40 bucks.

Excellent Beginner Tutorial

Murach's Java Servlets and JSPs is an excellent tutorial introduction for people who are already familiar with Java but who are new to servlets and JSPs. The book walks you through the development of a music store e-commerce website which you can download and run. The website folllows an MVC pattern with JavaBeans as the model, JSPs as the views, and servlets as the controllers. There are actually two versions of the website: One that uses JDBC, and another that uses JPA (EclipseLink). The website is hosted and developed on a local Tomcat server, with the JavaBeans sorted in a local MySQL database. The downloadable example code is set up for NetBeans because the author feels that is a simpler IDE for new people. After you walk through the tutorial, you should be in good shape to develop using whatever IDE you prefer.

The book follows a “paired pages” format that has a figure that contains diagrams, code fragments, screenshots, and short API listings on the right page, and the explanatory text on the left page. I like this format because it works well both as a tutorial to initially earn the material, and as a reference to look up examples of how to do things later. It should also work as a good classroom teaching format, because the figures could be shown on a projector while the instructor gives the explanation and answers student questions. There are also straightforward end-of-chapter exercises that involve running and making simple modifications to different portions of the music store website code.

Lots of books strive to be a comprehensive API reference, but they don't do a very good job showing how you would design and build a complete application using the API. As a result, they end up being little more than glorified Javadoc. This book takes a completely different approach. Instead of exhaustively describing every class, interface, and method in the API, it walks the reader through a series of common tasks when developing with servlets and JSPs. These tasks include installing and configuring Tomcat and MySQL, validating forms, persisting JavaBeans, working with cookies and sessions, sending email, developing custom tags, and securing your website with passwords and SSL, as it builds up the music store website.

It is also important to understand what this book is not. The book is not a study guide for the Oracle exam on servlets and JSPs. However, if you are new to JSPs and servlets and would like to take the exam, I would recommend reading this book first. Then buy and read an exam guide because the guide will then be much more understandable. While the book contains chapters that cover barely enough basic HTML5/CSS3 and SQL to complete the examples and exercises, I would recommend another book for deeper coverage of those topics.

One downside of the book people need to be aware of is that the electronic version I received used DRM, and can't be read using a normal PDF viewer. This is a particular problem for Linux users because there is no LockLizard viewer for Linux. I ended up temporarily installing Windows, NetBeans, and MySQL to walk through the tutorials, and using a physical copy of the book to get through it. Windows and Mac users should be OK.

There are a few topics I wish the author had covered such as how to use a web form to upload files to the server as multi-part form data, using tag files, and automating the testing of your application using JUnit or TestNG. Also, it would have been better if the example code followed the Maven conventions to show how to manage the dependencies that way, and to make importing the example code into other IDE's besides NetBeans much easier.

Overall, I would recommend this book to Java developers who want to learn servlets and JSPs.

They also include a source guide and an extremely helpful list of recipes by ingredient (e.g., all muffins with chocolate). The authors present their 101 master muffin recipes alphabetically—Almond through Zucchini—and offer several variations for each. Recognizing the recent "cupcakeization" of muffins, Weinstein and Scarbrough offer quite a few light and/or savory selections, such as Low-Fat Banana or Green Onion Parmesan. But there is no denying their sweet tooth, as witnessed by Coffeecake and Marmalade Muffins for breakfast, or Fudge, Macaroon, and Pineapple Upside-Down Muffins for dessert. Those on special diets will relish the selection of dairy- and gluten-free muffins, and for holidays, cooks might consider Haroseth, Fruitcake or Sweet Potato Casserole Muffins. Some of the ingredient combinations veer into the questionable (e.g., frankfurter-laden Corn Dog Muffins, Strawberry Black Pepper Muffins, or Duck Confit Quiche Muffins). Excelllent Subject for Comprehensive Reference

This is the eighth `Ultimate' cookbook title for authors Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough. Others have been on chocolate cookies, potatoes, brownies, shrimp, candy, ice cream, and party drinks. This is the first of this series I have reviewed and I sense the format works much better for a subject like muffins, brownies, and chocolate cookies, where all recipes have a lot in common than it does for potatoes or candy, where there is a large variation in cooking techniques.

The cover announces that the book contains over 600 recipes for sweet and savory muffins. This blurb may be misleading in two ways. First, there are only 100 full-page recipes, with each recipe expanded by up to eight (8) variations, and each variation is treated as a recipe. The potential number of preparations may go well beyond the 600 if you combine the 100 basic recipes with the ten (10) toppings (icings) recipes, giving a thousand variations. For sure, some toppings will simply not go with some muffins, but you get the idea.

By `muffin', the authors mean the classic American muffin that is a chemically leavened quickbread baked in a muffin tin, developing a domelike cap, and typically not iced. Unlike a cupcake, muffin recipes are meant to stand on their own, so they typically have more moisture and more flavor than the cupcake, since the icing is what usually carries the water for a cupcake. The authors specifically exclude the `English' muffin that is an entirely different animal.

The very best part of this book is the first chapter, `Making Muffins' which includes just about every tip you could possibly imagine regarding muffins, plus important notes on equipment and ingredients. The authors get double points from me for including the simple recipe for making your own baking powder and for the suggestion to use powdered buttermilk. I had already discovered this product, but this is a boon to everyone who buys a quart of buttermilk to make a batch of biscuits or muffins and has � of the quart go bad in two weeks. The authors are probably a little conservative with their estimates of the shelf life of baking soda and baking powder, although I will take proper note of their warning about measuring the life of baking powder from the date you open the can. Personally, I have successfully used an open can of baking powder for 6 months after opening. I also suspect the shelf life of baking powder is a lot longer than their 3 months. Unlike the mixture baking powder, baking soda is a simple inorganic chemical, almost as inert as salt unless it is added to an acidic liquid. The warning against using baking soda that has been used as a refrigerator deodorizer is not based on its loss of efficacy but is based on the noxious odors it may bring to the party.

The 100 primary recipes are arranged alphabetically, which, in this type of book, is a really good idea until you get to recipes which are not named according to their distinguishing ingredient, as in `Basic Muffin' and `Mexican Muffin'. Otherwise, this is excellent for a book you will go to a few times a year for holiday recipes, bake sales, and special brunches. This organization is supplemented by a cross-reference of recipes by most important characteristic other than the dominant flavoring. This groups, for example, all bran, cornmeal, chocolate, gluten-free, and low fat recipes together.

Considering the amount of detail given in the introduction cited above, the individual recipes are still quite detailed, with a prudent repetition of some of the more important warnings, such as the caution to use room temperature eggs and melted, but not too hot butter in the preparation.

Any fault found with this book would never rise above the level of nit picking, as the book is so successful at being a guide to baking good muffins. One nit I must pick with the copy editor is the use of the term `silicon' baking tins where the authors surely meant `silicone'. What is meant was a flexible, stick-resistant plastic. What was said was glass. The authors did a great service in warning us about the fact that the volumes of muffin tins often vary and different sizes can mean different baking times. I think they could have improved this point and some others by a few simple pictures. In the `room for improvement' category, a cross-reference of recipes to holidays and seasons would have been keen, especially as there are some recipes for less well known Jewish holiday occasions (See Haroseth muffins, p. 98). The writing is not quite as entertaining as Jim Villas' quips in his book `Biscuit Bliss', but then, these authors are not Jim Villas. Get both books. There is no overlap, as both authors stay on message very well.

This is an excellent treatment of a subject that works well with this approach. This gives us a great reference, saving us the journey through half a dozen other books for just the right muffin recipe.

Buyer Beware

Apple Muffin recipe - great. Black Forest muffin recipe - in the TRASH(after buying almond extract, eggs, milk, sour cherries, chocolate). Baked beautifully - smelled great - tasted - too horrible to describe. Like one of those Little Rascal episodes where someone pours the wrong ingredient into a cake batter. When I contacted one of the authors, Bruce, he (or someone answering his email) replied: "Yes - there's 3/4 cup of sugar missing...you might enjoy ... our other books...."

Aside from the ingredients and TIME and energy wasted - this recipe was obviously not tested after publication. How much more should we waste on other recipes in the book? Here's the reply:

First off, I am truly sorry that you had a bad experience baking one our recipes. I am sorry that you had to spend money on ingredients for that recipe. Yes, there is a mistake. There is no sugar listed and there should be. There should be 3/4 cup sugar added to the egg yolk, milk, and sour cream mixture. This error will be fixed in future printings.

I am glad that you enjoyed th apple muffins. They are a variation on an apple cake that my grandmother used to make me. I am sure she'd be delighted that people are enjoying it. I hope you have also tried some of our other books. You might really enjoy the ultimate ice cream book or the ultimate brownie book.

A must read for anyone interested in mammalian functional biology

Mammal Teeth: Origin, Evolution, and Diversity is simply one of the greatest teaching aid I have come across while teaching a course in mammalogy. It is extremely clear and well written and provides a much needed background (and details) on one of the more important parts of the functional anatomy of mammals.

This is a book I will keep referring to through the unforeseeable future and recommend to anyone studying mammals.

A wonderful piece of work that ties the evolution of mammal teeth together. The author does a masterful job of relating the geographical and environmental changes to the radiation of mammal species. I especially appreciate the topical quotes at the beginning of each chapter.

The references can get tidious within the text, because they are so expansive. The upside of such meticulous research and writing is that the reference section is a gold mine for further information.

Survey of tooth diversity in mammals

There has long been a real need for a comprehensive overview of the diversity of teeth in present-day and extinct mammals. Most of the well-illustrated classic works (including those by Owen and Giebel) on the dentitions of mammals and other vertebrates date from the nineteenth century and are hard to find now. Peter Ungar's new volume finally fills this void in the literature. It is really well written and effectively presents a great amount of information. My only criticism is that many of the illustrations of mammalian dentitions are reproduced at a fairly small scale, making it difficult to see details. This is surprising as the format of the volume could have been utilized for better illustration layout. As anatomy is a very visual science this editorial decision negatively impacts the book's utility.
