About the Author

J.S. Ratti has been teaching mathematics at all levels for over 35 years. He is currently a full professor of mathematics and director of the Center for Mathematical Services at the University of South Florida. Professor Ratti is the author of numerous research papers in analysis, graph theory, and probability. He has won several awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching at University of South Florida and�is known as the coauthor of a successful finite mathematics textbook.

Marcus McWaters is currently the chair of the Mathematics Department at the University of South Florida, a position he has held for the last eleven years. Since receiving his PhD in mathematics from the University of Florida, he has taught all levels of undergraduate and graduate courses, with class sizes ranging from 3 to 250. As chair, he has worked intensively to structure a course delivery system for lower level courses that would improve the low retention rate these courses experience across the country. When not involved with mathematics or administrative activity, he enjoys playing racquetball, spending time with his two daughters, and traveling the world with his wife.

Not what I was expecting

Being brand new, the quality of the book is great. One complaint: Where is the access code? I priced the access code at $80 on the MathLab website. Priced the book used here for $65, for a total of $145. Figured I'd just buy the brand new book that supposed to include an access code. Save money and get a new book right? NO!THIS BOOK DOES NOT INCLUDE AN ACCESS CODE! BUYER BEWARE! Amazon should make sure that it is clearly stated and well-known that this book does not include it. Prehaps in the actual TITLE of the book i.e. (w/o access code)!!

Buyer beware!!! although you may be purchasing a brand new textbook from amazon there is no access code included. for the same price i paid $136.20 i could have purchased a book with an access code for 10 dollars more from the publishing website. GARBAGE GARBAGE GARBAGE!! AMAZON YOU HAVE EPICLY FAILED!!

Just a hint to any buyers, this does not include the online access code. I thought it would, which is why i spent the extra money to buy it new. Pearson states that it comes with all new books, but not the ones from Amazon.

Readers of Jenny O'Connell's first book for teens, Plan B, will have high expectations for THE BOOK OF LUKE--and they won't be disappointed!

When nice girl Emily Abbot's family moves from Chicago back to Boston in the middle of her senior year, Emily and her two best friends come up with a plan that is not so nice. It's a project for their class time capsule, but it won't be the typical scrapbook or mix CD. They'll write a handbook for guys about girls. And who better to test out their theories on than arrogant Luke Preston? Emily, the three friends decide, will be the perfect person to try it out and report back. After all, Luke would never suspect the nice little Emily he knew way back when...But Emily's not what she used to be.

Before she knows it, however, the experiment has gone horribly wrong. Wrong in that Emily finds herself falling head over heels for her experiment!

THE BOOK OF LUKE is a funny, original story guaranteed to have readers fascinated from first page to last! This fresh, honest novel is full of amazing characters and excellent writing. Jenny O'Connell is a smart, talented author; I'm really looking forward to seeing what she writes next! This is contemporary fiction at its best; readers will not be disappointed.

So... I picked up this book and i didn't know what to think. I was bored one day and decided to read it... this is what i found. In this novel, the story takes you to Chicago to meet the oh-so-nice and always mannerful, Emily Abbott. Emily is class Valedictorian, a Senior in High Scool, has a football player boyfriend, and to top off her oh-so-perfect life... she is just plane nice.
Emily's family informs her that they are moving back to Boston where they origanly moved from. Emily's dad, however, has decided to stay to "think about some things". If this isn't bad enough, Emily's all-star boyfriend broke up with her THE DAY SHE WAS MOVING! So... now Emily is back in private school in Boston. Everything is the same. Her friends haven't changed and everyone still loves the lovable Emily Abbott. When asked about the past three years since she was gone, her friends (Josie and Lucy) tell her not much happened. Not much excpet that Josie's ex-boyfriend was caught cheating on her over christmas-break and broke up with her through email!
The Senior project is due for the traditional senior-time-capsul-project. The girls decide to make a book for boys in the future telling them what they are doing wrong and how to fix it to get a girl. The girls (mainly Lucy and Josie that is) decide that they need to test their theory. They force Emily into making Luke Preston, the hottest guy in school who also happens to be the one who broke it off with Josie, fall in love with her and then breaking his sorry little heart. Too bad Emily ends up falling for her "experiement" instead of wanting to crush him. It also happens that Luke kind of always had a thing for her too.
Emily has to keep the relationship a secret and the whole story takes you along with her little web of lies. Now all she has to do is work her way out of them!
I rated the story five stars because i instintly fell in love with it although sometimes Emily annoys me. Well written, had me on the edge of my seat. JUST READ IT! The worst that will happen is that you don't like it (yea right!) and you can put it down!

Born in Berlin in 1941, Sabina de Werth Neu knew little during her earliest years except the hardships and fear of a war refugee. She and her two sisters and mother were often on the run and sometimes homeless in the bombed-out cities of wartime Germany. At times they lived in near-starvation conditions. And as the Allies stormed through the crumbling German defenses, the mother and children were raped and beaten by marauding Russian soldiers.

After the war, like so many Germans, they wrapped themselves in a cloak of deafening silence about their recent national and personal history, determined to forget the past. The result was that Sabina spent much of her time wrestling with shame and bouts of crippling depression. Finally, after decades of silence, she could no longer suppress the memories and began reconstructing her young life by writing down what had previously seemed unspeakable.

Illustrated by vintage black-and-white family photographs, the book is filled with poignant scenes: her abused but courageous mother desperately trying to protect her children through the worst, the sickening horror of viewing Holocaust footage on newsreels shortly after the war, the welcome sight of American troops bringing hot meals to local schools, and the glimmer of hope finally offered by the Marshall Plan, which the author feels was crucial to her own survival and that of Germany as a whole.

This book not only recalls the experiences of a now-distant war, but also brings to mind the disrupting realities of present-day refugee children. There is perhaps no more damning indictment of war than to read about its effects on children, its helpless victims.

In her first book, De Werth Neu, a retired therapist born in "Berlin, Nazi Germany" at the start of WWII, recounts her nightmarish experiences as a refugee child from her native land. Forced from home as part of Hitler's efforts to strengthen the Eastern front, de Werth Neu, along with her mother and two sisters, endured countless relocations, assault and rape by Russian soldiers, never-ending hunger, and a horrific train ride during which babies died and toilet buckets overflowed into the crammed cars; "we were the lucky ones," she points out, "no one was trying to exterminate us." Such a sobering perspective is indicative of the author's amazing sense of gratitude, which resurfaces each time she recalls moments of great happiness: receiving an unforgettably delicious apple from a farmer's wife, having a tube of toothpaste all to herself, watching her mother dance. The constant back-and-forth between thrills such as these and the unimaginable suffering she endured has a bit of a wearying effect, but creates an engrossing account of the consequences of war and diplomacy for a single child. The memoir that Sabina shares here is very much reminiscent of "German Boy" (see my review) by Wolfgang W. E. Samuel, and "Barefoot in the Rubble" (see my review) by Elizabeth Walter, and follows in the footsteps of "Bread on My Mother's Table" (see my review) by Ingrid Andor, because she provides a psychological dimension in her writings that the other works lacked. The author recounts how as a child her life was put on hold after hordes of Russian soldiers started to flood Germany like swarms of locusts following the end of World War II, with a gang of them entering her home, raping both her and her mother, and leaving them helpless over shouts of laughter. Reading her words is extremely painful. Although her pain is in words, what she shares is just as visual as what the protagonist endures in the silver screen rendition of "Woman in Berlin" (see my review) by Anonymous, and is not meant for the faint of heart. Like Wolfgang W. E. Samuel, Sabina makes her way with family from eastern Germany away from the Russian armies to western Germany, finally making her way to the United States, expressing heartfelt thankfulness to the American people for their acceptance of her, beautiful words for any American who no longer sees their country as unique, especially for those who are not familiar with the millions who endured the undeserved persecution that often included murder following World War II. As a descendant of a Donauschwaben concentration camp survivor, this is the type of memoir that I would have liked written for me, albeit with a large element of fear, were it not for the stumbling block of grief which quickly arose when such experiences were revisited. Sabina credits the love from her second husband, Charles, as the source of courage to finally write this memoir. Thank you Charles.

Surviving the Red Army rapists and life in post-WWII Germany

Sabina de Werth Neu has written a memoir that is one of the most fascinating books I ve ever read. I could not put it down and read the entire book in 2 days. The author captures the unique difficulty of being German in the post WWII world early on. At Loc 100 she writes "I am German-there, I have said it. I can never be anything else. I have been hiding from this burdensome truth for most of my life and running from the nightmare of a war and the industrialized barbarism of an evil regime that I could not and did not want to accept, let alone try to understand. "

The author was born on September 26, 1941 in Berlin. Her family was moved to East Prussia, the worst place to be when the Soviet Red Army arrived. The family was evacuated to Czechoslovakia before the Soviet takeover. On May 8, 1945, the author, her sisters and mother were raped by Russian soldiers, the mother repeatedly. The author was not even 4 years old at the time of this sexual abuse. Her description of this event is ghastly. I have often come across comments on amazon that the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia was relatively peaceful or that these rapes were isolated - nothing could be further from the truth. These rapes were routine and in the case of Eastern Germany continued for years. Both Russians and Americans are in denial about this.

What is remarkable is that this family survived these events, and the post-war deprivations. The family was expelled from Czechoslovakia into East Germany. The mother (obviously) was so uncomfortable in Russian occupied East Germany and took her children to the west. She did not want to be anywhere near the Russians which was understandable.

The author is an unabashed pro-American cheerleader. She is enormously grateful to General George Marshall for the Marshall Plan and the assistance she and her family received from the Americans. At (kindle) loc. 943 the author writes; "In writing these pages, I am aware now that I never felt at home in Germany, nor did I feel a shred of national pride." Author Eckhart Tolle described a similar feeling. As a child, Tolle would play in the ruins of buildings from the war. He described feeling depressed by his experience of "pain in the energy field of the country" He too left Germany like de Werth Neu, at an even earlier age. My experience is different than these authors. I was born years after the war ended, and was fortunate to spend time in Germany in the 1970's and early 80's. I did feel at home there, and found the people, especially the young people, to be warmer, friendlier, and not at all superficial and cruel like many of the people I grew up with here in the USA.

There is a paranormal episode in this book too. The author's sister Tina talks Sabina into going deep into the woods near Stuttgart, ostensibly to a lover's lane to watch couples have sex. Instead, Tina digs up a skull of a woman. It is a graphic and gory episode - paranormal because Tina had been having repeated dreams about a man murdering women in the woods and seemingly knew where to look. The skull belonged to a woman who had been raped and murdered by a serial killer. Tina was not only psychic, but from the author's description must have been an empath as well.

The author does an excellent job describing the changes and improvements in life in West Germany. I enjoyed the section she wrote about the death of Stalin. I can imagine the relief her mother felt at the death of that monster. His death, like Hitler's, must have been celebrated throughout Europe.

This book is about the triumph of the human spirit. The author had a very difficult life, in spite of which she accomplished a great deal. It is also about the emotional damage inflicted by some very negative male figures including Red Army rapists, the author's father and an arrogant jerk of an ex-husband. It's a wonder that the author and her family survived as intact as they did despite their contact with the Soviets.

I absolutely love this book and this author for sharing it with us. I see reflections of friends and family in much of what she writes. I can only give this book the highest recommendation. Absolutely fascinating glimpse into post-war Germany.

This is a comprehensive, accessible collection of articles on a range of aspects of women's spirituality. I have had it for years, keep dipping back into it regularly for inspiration and stimulation. It is a fabulous book.

A MARVELOUS, INDISPENSABLE COLLECTION OF WRITINGS

Charlene Spretnak (born 1946) is an author, activist, academic and feminist who teaches in the philosophy and religion department at the California Institute of Integral Studies. She was a co-founder of the Green Party in the United States, and is also the author of Relational Reality: New Discoveries of Interrelatedness That Are Transforming the Modern World, The Resurgence of the Real, Missing Mary: The Queen of Heaven and Her Re-Emergence in the Modern Church, etc., and primary author of GREEN POLITICS.

She wrote in the Introduction to the first (1982) edition of this book, "All of the pieces in this anthology are active rather than reactive, revolutionary rather than reformist, and express broad political awareness... The title 'The Politics of Women's Spirituality' refers to our attitude toward life on Earth (i.e., spirituality) and the perception, manifestation, and use of power (i.e., politics) that stem from that attitude."

British playwright Churchill has always shown an unusual knack for combining striking theatrical experimentation and remarkably detailed re-creation of everyday life. Rarely, however, has she woven the two strands of her writing as tightly together as in this play in which one character, the Skriker, speaks long passages of Joycean (specifically, Finnegans Wake-ish) prose ("Heard her boast beast a roast beef eater, daughter could spin span spick and spun the lowest form of wheat straw into gold"), while the two others, Liz and Josie, both teenage girls, speak a very contemporary brand of English. This startling juxtaposition allows Churchill simultaneously to explore contemporary attitudes about the homeless and insane and tell a variation of the folktale about the malevolent, magical being that tries to trick a young woman out of her firstborn. The resulting play is rich, beautiful, and moving, though it may frustrate those who like their theater plain and simple. I believe The Skriker is Churchill's finest play, and I've read them all and seen a number of them. She has woven many of her recurring themes and motifs in this play to dazzling effect: magic and myth, time and timelessness, gender and womanhood, mothering, and the power of the theatre to transform. The play is witty and somber, reassuring and threatening, and brilliantly unpredictable throughout.

She was literally barred from the work site, a move that prevented her from advancing in her job. She quit several positions because of discrimination. Finally, she took a chance on a part time position she parlayed into a career beginner with a major Construction company in NY. After holding several "men's jobs" in contracting, Res met Donald Trump, at the Grand Hyatt project he was developing for the hotel company. She impressed him and when he had a new ground up project, he installed her as Executive in charge of Construction. The project was the world famous Trump Tower and the rest is history - a history filled with travail and triumph. All on the 68th Floor tells the story of Res's journey, what she endured and accomplished. It also describes the process of building in a way that entertains and instructs. The book is chock full of anecdotes about the rich and famous who lived and shopped at the luxurious Trump Tower and presents a picture of Donald and Ivana Trump as builders, that the world has yet to see. The author also talks about other projects, like the restoration of the Plaza Hotel and the development of the West side of Manhattan. Contracts and contractors, unions and government, politics and payoffs, all of the intrigue that goes into developing property, getting approvals, getting tenants and finally building skyscrapers. But the essence of the book is frankly feminism. It is a call to women to be themselves and do what ever job they think they can do, whatever they want to do and not allow stereotypes to influence them. It is a rebuke to the notion that women need to think or act like men, stating to the contrary that there should be no norms to follow and that people should be individuals following their instincts and not allowing society to define who they are by what they do. Res points out the dismal statistics about the number of women in construction, about the discrimination that still exists and issues a call to action to women, businesses and politics to take steps to get more women into this lucrative field, for which they are well suited. This book has something for everyone and is guaranteed to amuse, inspire and challenge everyone who reads it.

Great message to women considering careers in construction.

I have to admit that the many typos and repetitious sentences were quite annoying and I was disappointed that such an ambitious and capable woman allowed such badly edited memoir to go into print. But I loved the message so much that I have to give it 5 stars. I am a woman who's chosen a career in construction and I know from my personal experience that what Barbara had gone through is still very much alive and well in the industry. It was uplifting to hear another woman speak out about this because I thought it was just me being paranoid and overly "sensitive"!

She Did It Despite the Obstacles

In breezy style devoid of self pity Barbara Res tells the remarkable story of how she made it big time in the construction industry. A must read for anyone wanting to know how tough it was for a woman to succeed in a man's world and a cautionary reminder that many obstacles still remain. The construction business was and is a tough business but Barbara was able to reach the top while always remaining the ethical person she wanted to be. A good read for anyone.

An Inspiring Read.

All Alone on the 68th Floor provides an in depth look at how a brilliant little girl ends up at the top of the construction empire in New York City despite the almost exclusive role of men in that industry where we still hear men making cat-calls and whistling at women passing by.
This is also a fascinating tale of personalities and power brokers and how a woman managed to be considered the best choice for major projects in the construction of the Trump Tower, CitiBank Tower, the Grand Hyatt Hotel and the renovation of the Plaza Hotel among many other accomplishments.
The inside details of working closely with Donald and Ivana Trump and other luminaries is fascinating as well, but the real message here brings into clear focus how we continue to waste the talents of girls and women who have so much to offer in any human endeavor.
We have been deprived of so much of that talent for so long.
This is the 21st Century. It's time we move further toward a society where a man's place is also at home as much as a woman's place is also at work.
Congratulations to Barbara Res whose life and writing inspires us all toward that goal.
