Excellent, excellent presentation of one of the demonstrations for God's existence. This book comes at a critical time, when many have been taught that science and rational thought exclude the existence or even the possibility of God; the position has been cultivated so long that many seem to buy into it automatically. Dr. Augros treats of the subject masterfully, rendering the deductive argument into terms and examples that are readily accessible even to beginners in philosophy without sacrificing any of the rigor that the endeavor demands. He also exposes the fallacies of many (and I do mean 'many') objections of the "New Atheists" and others against the existence of God. If you have time for only one read on the question of God's existence and you're willing to give the case honest consideration, then this is the book to get.

Highly worth the read

If you're not into philosophical arguments, starting with chapter 6 might be a good idea. I'm not trained in philosophy, and the first 5 chapters were slow going for me, but still worthwhile. I'm going to have to read them again to really feel I understand them. The insights from later chapters, especially regarding the viewpoints of atheists and the mistakes we sometimes make in answering them, were very enlightening and helpful to me.

Ever since I saw the notice that Ignatius Press was going to publish Michael Augros' book "Who Designed the Designer?" I eagerly awaited my copy of the book and when I received it I read it immediately . What a feast for the mind! I remember telling an acquaintance after finishing the book," What a joy to read a philosophy book that demonstrates so beautifully the power of clear, logical thinking about the most important of all realities: God Himself. " As Mr.Augros indicates in the opening chapter of "Who Designed the Designer", he is not writing a polemical book. The spirit that animates this book, as the author says, is not attack or defense but wonder. Relying on the philosophical writings of Aristotle and Aquinas, the author leads the reader on a wonderful journey from ordinary human experience to the reality of God as the Uncaused Cause or Final Cause. While respectful of scientific reasoning and the empirical method , Mr. Augros uses a rigorous deductive method to demonstrate the existence of God. Along the way, the author enlivens his argument for God with humor and lovely anecdotes from his personal experience. I found especially memorable the insightful comments Mr.Augros makes about the beauty of the universe from the single rose to the billions of stars in countless galaxies in the heavens. After reading " Who Designed the Designer" I now understand why the eminent Catholic philosopher Peter Kreeft called it the single best book he had ever read on the existence of God. Mr.Augros deserves the highest praise for writing such an important book . The only comparable work , written by another talented Thomist , is Edward Feser's "The Last Superstition: A Refutation of the New Atheists".

About the Author

After earning a Ph.D. in Islamic history, Mark A. Gabriel became convinced that Muhammad did not speak for God. His search for truth led to the love of Jesus Christ, as well as complete rejection from his family and two attempts against his life by political fundamentalists. Now pursuing a Ph.D. in world religion at a Christian university, he speaks and writes about the true nature of Islam with the non-emotional accuracy of an academician. As a reflection of his new life in Christ, he has chosen a Christian name to replace his Islamic name.

Honesty sometimes hurts

I took a post graduate level class from Dr. Gabriel this year and I think that I can clear up a few misconceptions on his background and purposes. During the class when answering questions he always quoted the Quran from memory in Arabic. Then he would provide a quick English translation and have us find the verse in one of our translations. From this I can say that he did indeed have the entire Quran memorized, and hence that substantiated many of his biographical details. Also a local Egyptian gentleman visited the class, and they talked about their former homeland, Egypt.
Secondly, he repeatedly expressed his love for all Muslims, and encouraged the class to continue to pray for them. Clearly, anyone who thinks that Dr. Gabriel "hates" Muslims is using that word in a different sense than that with which I am familiar.
The book itself is a fair account of the differences between Jesus and Muhammad. I would suggest that many people need to actually read the Bible to see what it says about Jesus. I suggest that they start with the Gospel of John. Next I suggest that some of the critics of Dr. Gabriel's work should actually read the Quran and see what it teaches on various subjects. Most people in the west will be surprised.
Next, read a biography of Muhammad. Get a feel for the kind of person he was. The earliest biography of the prophet is Islam is by Ibn Ishaq and can be found in translation on the web. Follow that by searching through the collections of hadith on the USC-MSA website. Type in a few search words such as "Jew," or "Jihad." Be inventive in your research. If you enter the search with as few preconceptions as possible you will be amazed at what you can learn. Good luck and may God bless your search.

A Journey of Discovery

Dr. Mark Gabriel will take you on a journey of discovering Jesus and Muhammad in a way that few others can-as an insider, a believer, and a scholar of both faiths.
Born in Egypt, he grew up as a devout Muslim. He memorized the Quran, earned a Ph.D. in Islamic studies at Al Azhar University, and faithfully followed the laws of Islam. Yet the more he learned, the more disillusioned he became. He abandoned Islam at the age of 34.
After a year of searching for God, he opened a Bible for the first time one night. As he read the life of Jesus from the book of Matthew, he mind automatically compared it to the life of Muhammad. When morning came, he chose to follow Jesus. With the same zeal that he used to follow Muhammad, he has followed Jesus for the past 12 years, earning a Ph.D. in Christian education.
His perspectives on Jesus and Muhammad will give you new insight into these men. You will walk through their lives, discovering amazing similarities between their childhoods, their public ministry, and their teachings. At the same time, deep differences become obvious-in their attitudes toward people, their missions, and their views of God.

Scholarly comparison

The author quotes from the Quran and the hadith (which include Muslim practices and philosophy), both of which he knows well having memorized the Quran by age 12. He also knows the Bible well and quotes effectively from it in making his comparisons. Topically arranged, the book is easy to read and understand. Excellent! ! !

A Sharp Venture Into the Warrior's Mind

Sharpening The Warrior’s Edge – The Psychology & Science Of Training by Bruce K. Siddle is a book that takes a scalpel and dissects the many deep aspects of the psychological process when coupled with high stress survival situations.

Siddle does a phenomenal job of bringing forth a very systematic approach into the many crevices that encompass the totality of a warrior mindset. The author also delves into the oft-overlooked spiritual component that many other authors overlook in this field.

Although relatively complex in its breath and scope, the book actually is a quick read. That’s always a plus.

The way the author distills potentially intricate subjects such as survival mindset, implementing survival research, survival reaction time, the neural basis of survival motor programs and condenses them to bite-sized chunks makes the book that much easier to read.

Anyone from any walk of life could pick this book up and be able to garner useful information proportional to the motivation driving them.

Personally, the stress management, and breath control management information and discussions were the most useful for me, but your millage may vary.

All the information discussed is appreciated because it all forms various components of a robust methodology which can be employed in potential combat/survival scenarios of all types. Each of those areas of an individual’s repertoire discussed by the author can mean the difference between life and death, and to have that information discussed objectively put together for individuals is something that is beyond priceless.

Comprehensive approach to survival skill training

I'm not sure what book the "two-star" reviewer read or the scope and depth of those "15 years" of experience. I was a trainer for 21 of my 31 years in law enforcement and for that past 10 years since retirement as a consultant and I find this book very useful. I only wish I'd had something like this 35 years ago.

This is as succinct, understandable and straightforward an explanation as I have seen of survival stress, motor skill and response. Anyone with a background or interest in police firearms training, incident analysis or situation-response training should find this book relevant and will recognize much of this, as I like to say about myself, but "never knew what to call it before."

This is not a book for cowboys or wannabes. There are no quickie "isms" here, but I recommend it to serious police trainers.
