I love it!

Personally, another boring book on how to draw a photographic likeness is not what I was looking for... and this book is exactly what I wanted. I've been painting for many years so I know how to paint a likeness, but I want more. Willem de Kooning used to draw with his left hand, and with his eyes closed to shake himself out of the boring, and find some surprise in his work. I want to shake my hand out of the usual route so well known. This book will do it. The exercises are not all new, but some I hadn't used before and they do work. Books are like art, I guess... it's a personal thing. I am really glad I found this book!!! Many color photos, exercises that are easy to do and don't take a lot of materials, so if you're open to trying something new, buy this book!

Exciting book for the serious artist

I received my copy in the mail today and am very impressed. This is a rare thing: an art instruction book for the serious artist who is more interested in expressiveness than in creating a painting that "looks like something". In fact, the image on the book cover is the most "pretty" and "recognizable" of all the illustrations in the book (with the exception of the writer's final self-portrait at the end of the book). In a way, the cover image is misleading precisely because it is "prettier" than most of the images in the book. So if you find the cover image not to your taste you definitely will not like the other images in this book.

Where this book excels is in helping you become looser and more expressive in your art. The chapter on what to do when your become stuck or discouraged in your art work was particularly good, and timely for me. The author also writes about colleagues and teachers who have been instrumental in her development, and what she has learned from them. All in all, the book reminded me of college-level art classes that I have taken, where the emphasis is on experimentation, personal expression and avoiding cliched conventions.

This is not a book that will show you how to draw or paint a recognizable portrait. There are exercises, but not of the "how to" or "step by step" variety. One drawback of the book is that the exercises are not always illustrated (i.e. it tells you try this, then try that, but it doesn't always show you examples of what each step in the process might look like).

There is a lot more writing in this book than in the typical art instruction book. The author discusses the technique, process and content of all the illustrations in much the same way that you might in a class critique. Some of the work illustrated is challenging to appreciate (another reviewer called it "rubbish", and although I don't share her opinion, I do understand her point).

I noticed a few typos that the proofreader missed. One funny one was when she wrote that the artist might be "drawing and panting". At least I think it was a typo!

Because this book is written by a UK author, there is some terminology that will be unfamiliar to North American readers. I had to Google "what size is A1 paper" (answer: 23 x 33 inches, roughly the size of a sheet of watercolour paper), although I could figure out that a "rubber" is an eraser.

I ordered my copy from The Book Depository because even with shipping charges it was considerably cheaper than ordering directly through Amazon. The book came very quickly and in perfect shape.

I bought this book for my theories of Persuassion Class. Although I found out that you really do not use the book all that often in the class, the material was still relevent to the class and even helped you understand and comprehend theories that perhaps your Romanian teacher couldnt explain quite as well herself.

Excellent Professors and clearly understandable book

Clearly written and easy to understand, this book (along with Heritage and Clayman) thoroughly explain the basic concepts of conversation analysis, focusing on an institutional approach. Personally, I like to call this approach "math for words". I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in working in the fields of news and journalism, law, the medical practice, or as an emergency service call-taker. There is also a section on political speeches, and the framework used in creating an impact on audiences- which leads to a greater applause.

This book highlights the kind of useful information in institutional conversation that is easily taken-for-granted. "Talk in Action" puts a new meaning to there being power in words.

Couldn't put the book down!

Sharp Shooter has all of the great elements of action, love story, humor, danger and interpersonal relationships all rolled into one book. It was so captivating that I read the entire book in three days. I felt a great connection to the characters and was able to visualize each and every environment and ever changing landscape that the author so eloquently detailed. The love story is what surprised me the most because the author manages to inject this beautiful theme within the dark and dangerous world of the sharp shooter; which kept me on the edge of my seat. I hope that there is a sequel coming!

I am a voracious reader and have read many books by a variety of authors but I have to admit that when an author creates a story where it leaves a “footprint” on our hearts then I feel compelled to give this author a review. There is nothing like the feeling of being part of the characters and feel their connection. Ms. Murray has a very creative style! If this suspenseful story is the author's first book, I look forward to many more of Ms. Murray's stories.

Gripping novel

After reading the reviews, I was not too sure what to expect.

To my great surprise and pleasure, this is one of those that I could not put down.

Was there too much sex? Definitely, no.
Was it unbelievable that a person could only realize she is gay in her twenties? Definitely, not.

Two equally strong likeable gorgeous women. Great story line and writing.
How I wish more novels are up to this standard.

This book will help you make "The Right Choice"

Originally published in 1995 and updated in 2000, Home Schooling is less a defense of home schooling than it is an argument for why you, too, should home school. In one of his speeches at the NICHE conference, Klicka made the point that the most important job we have as parents is to raise our children to know and love Jesus. In Home Schooling, Klicka makes the point that we cannot expect our children to think and act like Christians if they spend their whole day, five days a week, in an environment that teaches them to think and act like a secular humanist.

Home Schooling begins with an indictment of public schools, underscoring its propositional rather than defensive nature. Public schools, in general, are failing our children academically, morally, and philosophically. Particularly enlightening is chapter 3's recitation of the express goals of the founders of state education and of the professors at education colleges and the subsequent manifestation of those goals.

But all of that is just why you should avoid public schools. In Parts II and III, Klicka affirmatively addresses why you should home school. Klicka notes the Biblical principles supporting home schooling, the benefits of home schooling, and the large number of influential Americans who were home schooled. He also sets forth practical steps to successful home schooling--providing the encouragement you need to realize that you can do it--as well as the success home schoolers have in college.

Home Schooling goes on to recite the victories won against those with an interest in a public school monopoly. The victories have come in both the legislative and judicial branches. Klicka has firsthand knowledge of many of them and some of them have been truly miraculous. Included in these sections is a thorough, but easy to understand recitation of home schoolers' rights.

The book also includes a number of helpful appendices, including "The Difference Between Christian Education and Humanistic Education," "Fifteen Reasons to Home School Your Teenagers," and "The Social Worker Skit: How to Handle a Visit From a Social Worker."

Throughout the book, Klicka effectively refutes each of the criticisms directed toward home schooling. Given the documented success of home schoolers versus their public and private schooled peers, no one can legitimately claim academic deficiencies as a basis for opposing home schooling. What about socialization? The question is too simple. What kind of socialization is preferable? As a wise person once told me, proper socialization comes from modeling adults, not other children. The public school environment is an artificial one where our children only interact with, save their teacher, other kids their age. No other setting in society is like that.

The one criticism of the book that I can muster is Klicka's reliance on substantive due process arguments for the constitutional right to home school. "Substantive" due process (an oxymoron) is the underpinning of the U.S. Supreme Court's created right to abortion. Clearly, as an attorney in a court of law defending home schoolers, Klicka should latch onto anything the Supreme Court has given him, but in a book dealing with home schooling history and long-term strategies going forward, substantive due process is not something to rely on. It was made up out of thin air and could vanish just as easily, or could be applied arbitrarily.

In any event, Home Schooling is the perfect book for people already home schooling who will be encouraged that they have made the right decision and will gain a greater appreciation of the sacrifices those who started home schooling in the 1980s made, for people thinking about home schooling but are not sure they can do it, and for people trying to understand why their friends and family are home schooling rather than doing what just about everyone else does. It will remain a valuable part of my library.

LOTS of information about home schooling and its history

I read this book after hearing it recommended by Chuck Missler in one of his briefings. This book is filled with a lot of information on the historical background of home schooling here in America. It lists many examples of home schooled children that went on to become some of the most important people in American history (basically most of the founders of the USA). Klicka also has a lot of statistics that show the success of today's average home schooled students when compared to average public education students. The book has been around for years, and this is a new, updated, version of that old book. Since this book was first written the number of home schoolers has skyrocketed. After reading this book, one can fully understand why most public school teachers choose to send their own children to private schools (if they don't choose to home school). Klick know from where he speaks. He is the head of the Home School Legal Defense Association that assists home schoolers around the country. He and his wife have home schooled all of their children and he is dedicated to the cause as part of his religious convictions. Today, there a many people, including many non-religious ones, who are choosing to home school, and Klicka is one of the people who have made that option possible today by making sure their rights to do it are kept intact. If you have even the slightest interest in possibly home schooling your children, then this is the book to start with.

The book that convinced me

This is the book that convinced me to homeschool. It looks at the failure of the public school system in teaching our children, statistics regarding teachers, increase in crime, SAT scores, etc. and the political issues driving the public schools. Great book.

About the Author

Paul Galdone was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1907 and emigrated to the United States in 1928. After finishing his studies at the Art Student League and the New York School of Industrial Design, Mr. Galdone worked in the art department of a major publishing house. There he was introduced to the process of bookmaking, an activity that was soon to become his lifelong career. Before his death in 1986, Mr. Galdone illustrated almost three hundred books, many of which he himself wrote or retold. He is fondly remembered for his contemporary style, bright earthy humor, and action-filled illustrations, which will continue to delight for generations to come.

I love this book. I remember it from when I was a kid, and I looked on Amazon to find this edition because I like this illustration the best. The book is short, could be read in about five minutes or so, but the drawings are beautiful. Has a great moral to the story. The illustrations are great, not like other ones where the animals look very cartoon-ish, like something out of the Looney Tunes or something; the illustrations on the animals in this book is very accurate to how they would naturally look. You also get an option to view the inside of the book if you want to check out the drawings... mostly, all of these fables are the same, so it's not like you can really said the story is "better" than another version, because they are all the same.

Our Favorite Version & One of Galdone's Best

We actually own three versions of the Little Red Hen, and all but this one I find a bit tedious to read in their repetition. Galdone manages to preserve the repetition that kids like so well, without making the story a drudgery to read.

Moreover, Galdone's illustrations make this book interesting, and very pleasant to read time and again. The sloth of the dog, cat and mouse are depicted in the most amusing detail, as is every nook and cranny of the house these unlikely four share. The Little Red Hen herself wears a persnickety expression throughout many of the illustrations, and I like the way that casts her in a slightly less glowing light. It adds a sort of complexity to the story. The book ends on the note of the dog, cat and mouse doing a great deal more to help out after the experience and leaves you with an image of each of them, looking properly shamed, whilst donning aprons and cleaning the house.

If you're looking for the ideal version of this story, Paul Galdone has certainly created it.

Lovely rendition of a classic story with a good moral

I love this rendition of The Little Red Hen. It's the story of a hard-working little red hen and her lazy friends who, though unwilling to help plant the wheat, tend it, harvest it, mill it, or bake it into a cake, are VERY willing to help eat the fruit of her labor. Some renditions of this story have the red hen share it with the friends anyway, but this to me undermines the very important message for children that "If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat." (2 Thess. 3:10). And interestingly enough, the friends decide to put forth the effort in the future when they know it's the only way to reap the rewards.

The illustrations are quite attractive and very cute: the "hangdog" expressions of the repentant friends at the end, the dog lounging in the hammock early on, etc. The text is rhythmic and enjoyable to read. "`Not I,' said the dog. `Not I,' said the cat. `Not I,' said the mouse." My pre-reading children can repeat this part of the story with me.

I highly recommend this book to all who are reading with preschoolers or elementary-aged children. It has good lessons and has also been greatly enjoyed by my children (ages 7 ½ on down). I've also given it as a gift before, and anticipate doing that again in the future.
