Excellent overview of the period

Each volume of Frederick Copleston's "A History of Philosophy" provides a detailed survey of the period and is written in a reasonably objective fashion. This is certainly true of Volume 8. Part I of this volume discusses utilitarianism and the British idealists. In Part II Copleston turns his attention to the American idealists (particular Josiah Royce) and the pragmatists (C.S. Peirce, Wm. James, John Dewey). He concludes by focus again on Great Britain and the philosophy of G.E. Moore and Bertrand Russell. Copleston's writing is clear and lucid, but not superficial. What he provides is far more than a sketchy overview. This is a detailed summary designed to give the student a good basic understanding of the most important thinkers of the period.

Great book on colonialism

Cook does such a good job with this book. He gives a very good introduction to why the Europeans colonized and then he goes into specific examples or as he call's them "case studies". The case studies are fascinating and the reader develops a new perception on the brutality of colonies.

About the Author
Jesse P. Pollack was born and raised in the Garden State, and has served as a contributing writer for Weird NJ magazine since 2001. Also an accomplished musician, Pollack's soundtrack work has been heard on Driving Jersey, an Emmy-nominated PBS documentary series. Death on the Devil's Teeth is his first book.



Mark Moran graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York City, where he studied fine art, illustration and photography. In the early 1990s, Moran teamed up with Mark Sceurman to create Weird NJ magazine, the ultimate travel guide to the Garden State's local legends and best-kept secrets. The magazine has since spawned several books and a History Channel television series. Moran lives with his wife and their two daughters in suburban New Jersey.

You May Want to Draw A Bye on This Book

The authors of Weird NJ magazine describe the various possibilities as to what happened to Jeannette DePalma whose body was discovered when a neighbor's dog brought home a partially decayed human arm. The book reviews the different scenarios as to whether the girl was murdered, a victim of witchcraft, or any other number of possibilities. Some individuals believed her and her sisters were wild teenagers and others thought not. The authors then go on to describe other neighboring cases such as the infamous John List case which create filler for the book. Photographs are provided throughout the book. I took a chance on this book. It didn't work out so I'll donate this book to our public library.

Shadowfane, the concluding volume of Janny Wurts' Cycle of Fire trilogy is an action-packed and exciting finale. As humankind is being destroyed by demons (who we now know are aliens) Jaric has realized that he has no choice but to brave the Cycle of Fire. If he succeeds, this trial will gain him the powers of a Firelord, but he risks the destructive madness that afflicted his father.

The action never lets up and, along the way, there are plenty of wins and losses and lots of heart-breaking suffering for all of our heroes -- especially Jaric, Taen, Taen's mother, Corley, and the Kielmark. There are also emotional displays of courage, grace, hope, faith, forgiveness, and love -- themes which I appreciate in fantasy literature and miss in the writings of a few recently popular authors. The ending of Shadowfane is satisfying, but intriguingly not closed.

While reading The Cycle of Fire, I found myself once again greatly admiring Ms. Wurts' imagination. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say that I loved the science fiction elements and how Veriset Nav, motivated -- almost consciously -- to complete its program, developed its own mythos to hide itself from humans and aliens.

I read the audio version produced by Audible UK. David Thorpe's enthusiasm is infectious. If you read The Cycle of Fire this way, I suggest using Ms. Wurts' website as a resource -- she has posted a helpful map and a glossary. paravia.com

Shadowfane is a mixture of fantasty and sci-fi. . . of course,though, it is the sci-fi that always rules. The whole book is gripping and it makes you want to find out what exactly happens next. . . and many things that happen are unexpected - lots of things are unexpected. It still is an excellent book and has a very good ending - at least I think it does

About the Author
Ralph E. Hanson is the chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Previously, he was on the faculty of the P.I. Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University where he taught for fifteen years. For more than fifteen years he has taught media literacy and introduction to mass communication. He was a founding developer of West Virginia University's online extended learning program He has also taught newswriting, blogging and commentary writing, community journalism, and diffusion of innovations. Ralph has a bachelor's degree in journalism and anthropology from Iowa State University, a master's degree in journalism from Iowa State, and a doctorate in sociology from Arizona State University. It could be a little more interesting...

but its informative. It just gets boring in areas and I have force myself to continue reading the material. But that's most textbooks. Obviously I only purchased this book to use for class. I love the class but will be glad when the semester is over...I don't know how much more I can stand of the book.
