The Rosy Cross in a Context of Conflict

Frances Yates is well-regarded for her superb study "Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition" (1964). This book (1972) is a sequel. It places the murky origins of Rosicrucianism in the context of the religious and political rivalries of the early 17th Century. It is an extremely engaging and fascinating study which, unfortunately, was not carried through to its logical end-point--it reads like a draft of a bigger and more definitive book. But a wonderful draft it is!
At this moment there is a danger that the collections of the Warburg Institute, which made all of Yates' work possible, may become unavailable to scholars or even dispersed. These collections are irreplaceable--they are the hard core of scholarship in 16th-17th century cultural evolution. This is something extraordinary

Absolutely different and interesting research about the mystical side of early modern history, this kind of book is not written too many times. Most of these kind of books give just shattered "who is who"-collection, but this book investigate the development of magical beliefs, alchemy, science and the connection of these in rosicrusian view, ordinary sources are well attached to the big picture and anachronism is avoided, this is what I call the true historical research. Purely scientific approach to the field that is not considered very scientific. Quite expensive book, but quality costs!

In my opinion this easily ranks among the top books ever written on the Rosicrucian movement. Yates gives prolific detail regarding the earliest developments of this occult group (sometimes overwhelming if you are not already somewhat familiarized with the material). This is a must-read for any serious student of the topic and I highly suggest it to those with an interest in learning more about the order. However I do suggest a bit of research on the Rosicrucians and esotericism in general prior to diving into this one if you want to get the most out of it.

A teenager's gift of premonition becomes a curse in Proulx's confident debut. It's the fall of 2002 in Stokum, Mich., a rank little pinprick of a town, where a night of pot smoking brings about Luke Hunter's prediction that his friend Stan will be crushed by a red van with out-of-state license plates. When the random prophecy comes true, a media madhouse infiltrates Luke's quiet life while his parents remain confused and frustrated. Dubbed the Prophet of Death, Luke experiences more death flashes that become reality. Terrified by his new ability, Luke gets a prescription for a powerful sedative, which stops the visions for a while, but soon they—and his general disillusionment with life—return. As Luke tries to make peace with his psychic abilities, he crushes out on a girl at school and is the subject of an attempted religious intervention. Though a couple of plot points are left unexplained or unresolved, Proulx channels the ennui, insecurity and inner yearnings of a teenage boy to produce a fast-moving tale of struggling youth that has a great potential for YA crossover. Good for a rainy day teen read, nothing more

While it was in the Library looking for a good read after finishing "Everlost", I came across this. A glance at the black cover had me all interested- A kid foretells a friend's death for no reason and it ends up being true. How do you imagine that happening? I checked it out, took it home and finished it in 2 days, ANd I'll be honest- I thought it was good, but nothing really special. I can understand that this was Proulx's debut novel, and most debut novels are not that great, but this one... meh. I dunno what to think.

THE GOOD:

-Proulx must be a mother, because she manages to capture the teenage boy voice very well. Sadly, I know a lot of people who live like Luke Hunter- very spoiled, angst, and do drugs. And believe it or not, Teens do swear that much- ever since age 13, I swear like a pirate!

-It's well paced- some bits are slow, some move fast, and the book draws its conclusion wonderfully.

-The storyline- this mixes in a "Thirteen" type teen slang with the paranormal. Nobody would ever have thought that the two could merge very well.

THE BAD:

-There are so many unnecessary bracketed sentences and details. Yeah, lucky you, you went to Spain and on vacation you lost your virginity. Keep that in your diary, Luke, don't share it with the world.

-The story. "But you just praised the story!" True, I do like the story, I just don't think it was written the way it should have been, or at least how I wanted it to be told. Basically, as the story unfolds, Luke tries to pretend certain events in the book that happened earlier didn't happen. Well guess what, they did. We were there. We read it.

-THe main character, Luke, is such a male Mary Sue character, if there ever was such thing. Everything seems to be perfect, yet he hates it. Come on, wake up and smell the sunshine! You have many expensive electronics and stuff, you have a roof over your head. Think of the homeless people who DON'T have that...

Overall I am very mixed about this book. It's good in some parts, bad in others, and as a whole, feels rather disjointed.

Mesmerising

I adored this book.

Picked it up a couple of weeks back at a sale - one of our stores imports mammoth amounts of stuff specifically for their sales; it has nothing to do with the quality of what's on offer - and I ripped through it in three days, doing two-thirds of it in one sitting on the last day.

The story is incredible. The synopsis initially makes you think of something like Final Destination or something similar, but that's about where it all stops because Final Destination was about being scared of dying and trying to change fate whereas this is about someone dealing with the fallout of knowing people are dying and being sometimes unable and sometimes unwilling to change fate.

The author has managed to encapsulate modern teenage life beautifully. I'm some way past seventeen, the protagonist's age in the novel, but I have dealings with kids who are around that age and I think she's spot on with it. Luke is misunderstood, but only to a point, and apathetic, but only to a point. She paints a very real portrait of a modern kid wasting away in a stagnant town. The story itself is Luke's narrative and comes across as his version of therapy, putting everything down in black and white to deal with it himself. His train of thought is simultaneously dark, comic, self-deprecating and self-important while still being brutally honest and downright brutal in itself. No punches are pulled.

I was enchanted from the very first page to the very last line, through the journey of what might veer off into some sort of supernatural/sci-fi at any point but instead grounds itself in the emotions of a personality which was once strong but is now fragile and weakening daily.

It is a spectacular first effort and I'm looking forward to the author's next work.

21st Century Teenage Angst

The premise of the plot for "Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet" is well developed and well thought out. The real flaw comes in the presentation. At times, I found it hard to believe the book was written by a woman. Yet at other times, the author seemed too anxious to present the main character in proper context. For example, the constant name-dropping of rock bands seemed forced. In the overall picture, the debut novel is solid.

Luke Hunter's problems begin when he predicts his friend Stan's death. With the conflicts between his parents, problems with friends and girls, and pot smoking are factored in to the equation, Hunter is a pretty average teenager. The predictions of other deaths torment him throughout the book as he tries to forge a relationship with his dead friend's girlfriend. Faith becomes a focus to Luke as his other friends drop out of the picture. And when Astelle, a girl Luke thinks is dead, enters Luke's life, it becomes hard to empathize with the main character.

The angle of the story that draws Christianity into the story is a little uncomfortable. Particularly with other themes presented in the story, any statement making risks drawing away from the story.

There is a lot to like about "Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet" as it is a quick read; though being written in contemporary teenager dialect makes the wording cumbersome at times. Yet most of the teenage dilemas explored in the book are not really are not that far from the average teenager.

I love taking pictures

I love taking pictures, especially about nature, I love to take pictures of the beach, mountains and rice fields. I already owned a DLSR camera, but honestly, I still do not know how to use its other functions. I always use the auto function. That is the reason why I downloaded this book, hoping that I can get some tips. And I was not wrong, there are tips and guides, especially about the shutter details, the tone of the picture, black and white, and so on. I also appreciate the effort of the author on how he explained the details that a beginner like me can understand. I enjoyed reading the book.

Quick and simple introduction to index investing

John Bogle created the world's first index fund in 1975. In this book, he describes why you should make index funds the core of your investment portfolio.

Bogle starts off with introducing index funds through a parable that describes how middle-man costs in finance eat away at investors' profits. He discusses why speculation doesn't work and why business reality (in his definition, divident yields plus earnings growth) is more important that market expectation (changes in P/E based on what investors are willing to pay for various equities).

Bogle spends a few chapters discussing various problems with regular actively managed mutual funds, covering issues with performance (he asserts that less than 1% of all mutual funds were able to beat the market consistently over the past half century), various costs (expense ratios, sales charges, advertising fees, turnover costs, tax implications), poor market timing, and finally the difficulty of choosing a mutual fund (he states that there's no good way to pick a fund, since we can't foretell the future, and past performance is not an indicator of what's to come). He brings the reader to the "common sense" conclusion that index funds, in their pure simplicity, are the logical choice for any investor, as they provide the diversified return of the entire market with miniscule fees and minimal effort.

The last few chapters cover bond funds, ETFs, and a few pages of investment advice - which boils down to keeping at least 50% (if not all) of your money in broad-market index funds. Interestingly, Bogle spends a chapter discussing what Benjamin Graham would have thought about index funds, citing various quotes from Graham's "The Intelligent Investor" and certain blurbs from Warren Buffet. He, of course, concludes that Graham would have praised index funds.

So, did I like the book? Yep.. it was pretty good. Bogle writes very clearly and visibly tries to keep his discussions simple and to the point, so as to appeal to the widest possible audience. And with good reason! Bogle's advice is very applicable to the many individual investors today - index funds are a great low-cost and low-maintenance way to get your share (or all, as Bogle suggests) of the market's return.

To convince the reader, Bogle uses many diagrams to illustrate returns of various mutual funds vs. index funds, and to compare what your original investment would look like after a certain time - based on how it was invested. I found an error in one of the diagrams - exhibit 10.1 (and the text around it) on page 108 lists the average fund advisor return as $188,500 instead of $88,500. Not a big deal, but it slightly undermines the point he's trying to make on that page. Overall, I feel that Bogle's diagrams illustrate some good harsh realities - he clearly illustrates how a few percentage points (i.e. the costs associated with actively managed mutual funds) can eat away enormous chunks of your money over time.

To bring more authority into his argument, Bogle provides a "Don't Take My Word for It" section at the end of each chapter, where he quotes various respected investors and professors to support the points he made in the chapter. I enjoyed this, but it's important to be aware that some quotes can often be interpreted very differently outside a certain context.

One very obvious issue with this book is that Bogle is selling his own product - Vanguard's funds. He doesn't try to hide this in any way. He uses Vanguard's funds in nearly all examples, and he often hints how his "world's first index fund" is the greatest thing since sliced bread. You can't really blame the man - his contribution to the world of finance and investing is enormous, and he damn well should be proud of his accomplishments. So I think it's okay to cut Bogle some slack in this area.

The book is short - about 215 small-size pages. You can probably sit down and read it in a few solid hours. It also goes pretty quickly, as the material is not dense and easy to follow. However, some may argue that the book is too long for what it is trying to demonstrate. True, Bogle's advice really can be summed in just a few pages - index funds are a great choice for the average investor. But I have to say that I enjoyed reading the examples and history that he provides.

In conclusion, I recommend this book to any individual investor. While Bogle's advice is in no way eye-opening or revolutionary (chances are, you already know that index funds are a very low-cost and low-maintenance way to diversify), it is good to remind yourself the reasons why you should stay away from most actively managed mutual funds. As Bogle describes, this is all common sense - but we're often blinded by flashy advertisements, hot market sectors, and seemingly-reachable dollar signs. This book is a good reality check for the average individual investors.

I wish I could give this book 4.5 stars - but since I can't due to Amazon's rating system, I feel that it is more of a 4-star book rather than a 5-star one. It has solid advice, but it should not be considered the end-all of investing, and some of the advice and quotations should be taken with a grain of salt. Overall, however, it's a great and insightful read. I plan to buy a couple extra copies to give to my family.

Pros:
+ quick and easy read
+ lots of examples and diagrams to demonstrate how high expense ratios and other hidden costs can devastate a portfolio's return
+ some good basic investment advice: buy and hold, avoid emotional decisions, don't be enticed by "new hot trends" (as by the time you find out about them, prices are already inflated), diversify into the whole market, look into costs before buying, etc.
+ great format - short chapters, useful data, neat quotation sections at the end of each chapter

Cons:
- some may be turned off by Bogle's plugs for Vanguard funds (this didn't really bother me)
- may seem lengthy to drive one main point home (but keep in mind that there are quite a few good tid-bits scattered throughout the book)
- take some citations with a grain of salt

Great concise investing guide!

This latest book from Vanguard founder John Bogle is a gem. For those of us who are investment junkies, his past works have been superb, but a little overwhelming for regular readers who need their guidance in smaller and more direct terms.

The Little Book of Common Sense Investing fills that void. For Bogle fans, this is a summary of what we already know and you will not find a lot that is dramatically new or different. For readers who need a stern lecture on what is right and what is wrong, this is a perfect guide.

One nice touch in this new book are a variety of quotes Bogle uses that say "If you don't believe me" or "Don't take my word for it". He quotes Warren Buffet, Benjamin Graham and other major figures that confirm the advice he gives is right.

With all the large confusing investment books on the market today, this one provides a small friendly guide that allows the reader to focus on the behaviors that lead to success in investing. This is the finest new book on investing in 2007 and a must read for all investors who need to cut through the noise to find the truth. Thank you Mr. Bogle!

Clear and Forceful Presentation

Who better to make a straightforward argument for the index mutual fund than the man who developed the first of its kind for Vanguard in 1975. The stock market offers the return of the businesses it represents to investors. These returns are not received, because rather than 'buying' the market with a fund that tracks those returns, investors are sold actively managed funds that try to outperform the market and in the end dilute those returns with crippling fees and costs from excessive trading. The argument has been made by other distinguished writers in recent years, but investors will find this industry giant's take on the matter forceful.

What's new is Bogle's sobering expectations for future market returns. Over the past century companies have produced a 4.5% dividend yield and a 5% earnings growth rate (9.5%) for investors - before actively managed fund costs have stripped away much of that wealth. Today dividend yields on equities are under 2%. Earnings growth rates in the future may or may not be lower than the historical average. What seems apparent is that investors are less willing to pay for those earnings than they have in the past - as measured by a decline in price earnings ratios. Bottom line: we may be looking at a period of market returns of just 7-8%, and after all the "intermediary" costs of the mutual fund industry, investors will see that return dramatically reduced. This is why costs matter. The index mutual fund is the least expensive way to get the market's return into your pocket. Unfortunately, many 401 (k) retirement plans do not include some of the key U.S. and international indexes recommended by Bogle.

Bogle's view of the flood of ETFs (exchange traded funds) that slice and dice markets into specialized sectors is that they have only increased risk with the illusion that they have diversified it away. They are a "wolf-in-sheep's clothing". That they can be so actively traded (long and short) defeats the underlying idea of owning the market for its long-term gains. Ultimately ETFs fail to offer the "quintessential" promise of a total stock market index fund to "earn [a] fair share of the stock market's returns". He sarcastically suggests they carry warning labels. Industry insiders will sit-up at Bogle's swipe at noted Wharton professor, Jeremy J. Siegel (author of the widely admired, STOCKS FOR THE LONG RUN). Recently Siegel has helped promote a family of ETF securities that shift the composition of the underlying indexes from a traditional capitalization weighted model to one that emphasizes dividends. For Bogle, these are siren songs based on data mined ideas that my or may not work in the future.

Lacks scientific structure and validity

As a student of psychology and psychical phenomena working on in-depth studies regarding facilitated communication and alphanumeric devices (Ouija boards, pendulums, dowsing, etc.) I must say I am slightly disappointed in this book. Of course the title suggests the phenomena produced during Ouija sessions is facilitated by "spirits". This is highly misleading and completely unscientific. Unfortunately this approach also promotes superstition and further suppresses scientific advancement.
The Ouija board (or similar forms of facilitated communication and ideomotor response) has been seriously investigated as a form of therapy for people with disabilities with communication skills (autism, PTSD, etc.). All that said, this is a cute read as a novelty item and would make a nice addition to a para-psychological library, for reference only of course.

About the Author

Norm Champ is a partner in the Investment Funds Group of law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP and teaches investment management law at Harvard Law School. Previously, he was the director of the Division of Investment Management at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Under his leadership, the SEC adopted landmark reforms to strengthen the money market mutual fund industry. Interesting account of the author's experience

This is a well-written account of the author's experience while at the SEC. I have heard similar stories about the inner workings of the SEC, so I find Champ's stories more believable. In some spots though I found myself wondering how he could remember such great detail like how they exactly entered a building and the security that day, etc. Maybe the author simply has a great memory. In any case, this is not a difficult read and the technical jargon is limited, so I would think many people interested in the topic would enjoy it.

The only thing that I didn't like is the chapter on "advice" at the end. Preventing the next crisis is a very difficult task. Regardless of the rules and how they are implemented, there will be people that will try to bend them and, by the law of large numbers, there would be some (by random chance) that would be able to go undetected and end up resulting in catastrophic results.

Missing the forest for the trees

The title I almost used was "no good deed goes unpunished." Norm Champ is an experienced securities lawyer who joined the SEC to help improve the oversight of the financial industry and prevent future frauds like Madoff. Once inside the agency he discovered how distant the SEC was from living up to the trust the public puts in it. While most SEC employees care about the mission, the fact remains that it is a job for life for those under the civil service rules and plenty feel emboldened to do what they want, and when they feel like doing it. And any employee can send anonymous emails or faxes (a predominant method of communicating at the SEC) accusing their target of misconduct, which must be investigated. Champ went to do well but could not entirely escape the clutches of dysfunction.

Champ found an agency where standard procedures were non-existent, where instead it was what a particular office felt they should do or what the office lore said they were supposed to be doing. An agency with an outdated computer system and a legion of contractors dedicated to ensuring it never was replaced so that their "maintenance" contracts continued. Where examiners sat on investigating the Stanford ponzi scheme because the record request would take too long. Where they never requested the Madoff trading records (which would have revealed there weren't any) because they thought the mountains of trades they thought existed would take too long to go thru. Every page is a new outrage.

The problem I have with the book is that it reads more like a diary than an investigative book about the finance industry. Champ describes meeting after meeting, conversation after conversation. And while he provides specifics about how poorly the agency functions it's hard to read more than a few dozen pages without it becoming numbing. Champ clearly understands the problems at the agency, and has the experience from working in the private sector to point out where the agency is stuck or malfunctioning. I just don't see enough people willing to wade through this book to make a difference. Which leaves me sad and disappointed.

Take The Money and Run

I liked this book more as a memoir than expose. It is readable with a pleasant, chatty tone. He does a good job describing his role and the challenges facing the financial markets and the SEC. that the government agency is fun like a collection of petty fiefdoms comes as no surprise. The politics and widespread corruption of Wall Street also are not news although they should be. The author does a decent job explaining the mechanics of the system but spends too much time on extraneous material like office supplies. He does make some viable suggestions to forestall the next catastrophe and to accommodate risk,.But alas, like the little Dutch Boy, there are too many holes to plug and the hole pluggers won't act until after the dam has broken.
